Summer Wine Nine Bark

How Do I Mulch Physocarpus Summer Wine

Planting Summer Wine® Black Ninebark & Tour my Other Ninebark Varieties // Northlawn Flower Farm

We highly recommend that you mulch your Physocarpus Summer Wine with either a ground hardwood mulch or a ground cypress mulch depending on your local availability. Any type of mulch will do but cypress or hardwood mulch will be of a higher quality and provide better nutrition overall as they breakdown. Mulching helps to keep weeds away which will compete with your new investment for water and nutrients. A 2 to 3 inch layer of mulch is sufficient but remember to take care not to cover any part of the stem of the plant with mulch. Its better to leave a one inch gap of space between the mulch and the stem or trunk of the plant.

Summer Wine Black Ninebark Care

Although your Summer Wine Black Ninebark requires no annual pruning or deadheading, you can help it look its best and flower well by removing heavy, old wood branches every few years. Don’t trim your winebark back like you do most shrubs. The plant can handle most soil types and needs average watering but is drought tolerant after the first year. You can scatter some balanced fertilizer around the base of the plant the first year, but it’s not necessary. All the shrub needs is full sun to achieve the dark red color.

Sun Exposure And Soil Conditions

Although it will adapt to a couple of hours of shade a day, it is much better to grow the Summer Wine Ninebark in full sun, as this keeps the leaves looking great and strongly-colored. Too much shade will turn them greenish and produce weaker growth. This plant will grow in almost any soil that is well-drained, and not constantly wet. It grows in acid and alkaline soils, in clays or sands, and even in poor urban soil, construction waste and other difficult locations. It grows well on banks and rocky slopes too.

History And Origin Of The Summer Wine Ninebark

Physocarpus SUMMER WINE

Throughout the east, from New York state to Florida, you can find the ninebark, Physocarpus opulifolius, growing along riverbanks and in open areas on gravel or around the edges of woods. The wild, green-leaf form was widely grown in northern gardens for a very long time, but 20 years ago we started to see colored leaf forms appearing, and since then there have been many, with either yellow or red leaves.

In 2000 Timothy Wood, a plant breeder with Spring Meadow Nursery, Inc. Grand Haven, Michigan, took pollen from the original red-leaf ninebark, Diabolo® and used it to pollinate a traditional green-leaf dwarf form, called variety nanus. Among the seedlings was what he was hoping for a more compact plant that had red leaves. His new plant was named Seward and patented in 2004. The registered trademark name Summer Wine® was taken out for it in the same year by Spring Meadow Nursery.

  • size of plant when recieved

I work in a nursery. a plant selling for $29.99 is generally a 2 gal plant maybe 1 foot tall. to expect a plant looking like on in the picture is unreasonable. The Summer Wine Ninebark is indeed a beautiful plant. Hopefully the unhappy customer will plant what she received, watch it quickly grow into a beautiful plant and perhaps write another review. Pictures of plants on sites like this will show you what the plant will look like after a couple to a few years growth. Don’t expect to get a full grown plant by mail.

    not happy

I thought I was getting a plant like the one in the pictures. But mine was way smaller! For the price, you would think you would get a bigger plant. And the company said I couldn’t return it! I won’t be coming back!

Growing up Italian, there are two main passions in life espresso and wine. Mike owned his own cafe for over 10 years, and decided it was time to master the other Italian beverage. Winemaking is in Mikes blood. Memories of making wine with his father meant waking up early and picking up the crates of grapes, crushing the grapes and filling the damigians in the cantina. Waiting to test the wine with his dad, tasting it until it was just right for bottling, and then finally getting to enjoy a small glass at the dinner table while enjoying his moms homemade pasta. Those are memories Mike will carry forever and plans to pass down to his son, hoping his parents are smiling down on him with pride.

Excited to join the Vin Bon Family, Mike takes pride in knowing he is producing a quality product where the customer can personalize their batch of wine, knowing he is providing it to them for less than half the price of LCBO wines. It was also important to Mike to be able to provide a wine that has less than 1/10th of the additives and preservatives making it a healthier choice.

At Vin Bon Richmond Hill, we can create custom labels for weddings, events, special occasions, and corporate marketing/gift giving. Mike would love the opportunity to help you craft your own personal batch of wine that you can enjoy with family and friends.

How Do I Water Physocarpus Summer Wine

Online Orchards 1 Gal. Summer Wine Ninebark Shrub

After back filling and lightly compacting the 50/50 mix of existing soil and compost give the Physocarpus Summer Wine a good deep watering. This is not to be rushed. Most of the water you put on the plant at first will run away from the plant until the soil is soaked. A general rule of thumb is to count to 5 for every one gallon of pot size. For example a one gallon pot would be watered until you count to 5 a three gallon pot would be 15 and so on. Check the plant daily for the first week or so and then every other day there after. Water using the counting method for the first few weeks. Gator bag Jr. can be used to help aid in this process and also provide plants with a good soaking due to the slow release of the water into the root-zone of the plant. Soaker Hoses can also be used to water when planting a long hedge.
