Deep ruby in color, this wine boasts aromas of raspberry and blueberry perfumed with floral notes and touches of cinnamon and nutmeg. On the palate, cherry and raspberry fruit comes forward with layers of cassis, blueberry, vanilla cream, spice, and a sweet note. The texture is smooth and silky with well-integrated tannins and good acidic weight. The wine finishes long and polished.

Expressive and elegant, this exceptionally food-friendly wine will pair delightfully with a variety of dishes, from grilled T-bone steaks with chimichurri sauce, to miso-marinated sea bass or grilled salmon. Wine & Vintage Details

Tasting Note

Our 2014 The Leap Cabernet Sauvignon captures the distinctive personality of our estate vineyard and the outstanding vintage, which crafted a wine of great intensity, a multilayered mouthfeel and deep, pure, richness. This wine is classic Stags Leap District Cabernet, offering blackberry and black currant aromas on the nose, along with hints of white pepper, and a lively freshness that is reminiscent of camphor trees blowing in the wind. On the palate, there is a beautiful balance of complexity and elegance, featuring juicy, mouthwatering blackberry compote, Bing cherry and black raspberry cream pie. With present tannins, this Cabernet exhibits the iconic power and longevity that have become synonymous with Stags’ Leap estate wines and drinks beautifully, representing the opulence and grace of the estate.

Vintage Note

Despite drought conditions, the 2014 vintage proved to be ideal, with excellent quality reminiscent of 2012 and 2013. The winter was one of the driest on record in California, but substantial rains in early spring were timely and set up the vines for a strong start. Summer temperatures were milder than expected with no extremes, and after early budbreak and veraison, harvest was unusually early in 2014. Despite this, the overall dry season was ideal for producing a fresh Cabernet Sauvignon of wonderful quality.

From a blend of beautiful sites across the valley, including Arcadia Vineyard in Coombsville and Rancho Chimiles in Wooden Valley, as well as small amounts of grapes from S.L.V. and Fay, this wine is inviting in dense aromas of red fruit, caramel and brioche. With dashes of Petit Verdot and Malbec, it finishes on accents of tobacco and cedar. Virginie Boone

STAGS LEAP CABERNET SAUVIGNON FAY VINEYARD 2014 750ML

1872 – A Vineyard is Born After decades of being owned by a multitude of owners – via Mexican land grants , homesteading, a bounty award, and patents – the Grigsby family consolidated a 700-acre parcel where the current Stags’ Leap estate resides today. The Grigsbys planted grapes on the land in 1872 and 13 years later they transferred the land to W.W. Thompson and H.H. Harris . The next year Mr. Harris conveyed his interest in the property to Thompsons nephew, Horace Blanchard Chase.

1886-1909: The Chase/Mizner Era In the late 1880s, Horace Chase, an eligible bachelor from Chicago, and Mary Ysabela Minnie Mizner, belle of society in the former state capital of Benicia, met at Napa Soda Springs Resort in the hills outside Napa. They fell in love and were married in 1888 at the Benicia home of Minnies father who had served as California State Senator for two terms in the 1860s and who later became an ambassador to Latin American countries. Shortly thereafter Horace and his uncle divided their 700 acre tract into two parcels and Horace became sole owner of the northwestern 365 acres. The Chases were known for their lavish hospitality and, in season, hosted the scions of San Francisco society during an era of great wealth stemming from gold and silver mining. During the winter, the Chases left Stags Leap and spent their winters in San Francisco attending opera, theater, receptions, Cotillion Club dances, and hunt balls at the Palace Hotel.

This wine is thick and rich in cocoa powder, cassis and cedar, plus a slight note of blueberry in the background. Polished tannins give it structured elegance and a medium-bodied sense of ripeness that’s welcome at the dinner table. Virginie Boone

Cornering The Stag With Artemis

No one could have predicted that the publication of a Time Magazine article headlined Judgment of Paris would be the catalyst for one of the watershed moments in the history of the American wine industry.

At the Paris tasting organized by Steven SpurrierWiniarskis 1973 Stags Leap Cabernet Sauvignon outpointed Mouton Rothschild, Haut-Brion, and Léoville Las Cases much to the chagrin of a panel of nine French judges.

In the late fall of 2006, we published our first story on WineAccess. Had you told us then that 10 years later, our fledgling website would one day offer its membership one of the most iconic and historically significant Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons Stags Leap Cask 23 we would have questioned your sanity.

Our allocation of Robert Parkers first 100-point Stags Leap Cask 23 Cabernet Sauvignon disappeared in a flash just hours after we hit Send. Impressed, Winiarski assured us hed come back with a new allocation something that would appeal to WineAccess members who couldnt stomach the $240 price tag for Cask 23.

Warren has made good on that promise, and today, weve cornered the stag once more. The 2014 Artemis is one of the finest Napa Valley Cabernet blends from the 2014 vintage that weve tasted and one that is ready to drink now.

In 2014, Notaro blended Cabernet Sauvignon from the acclaimed Stag’s Leap Estate vineyards with the best drawn off choice parcels in St. Helena, Coombsville, and Antinoris Antica vineyard on Atlas Peak.

If you were to turn the pages of a history book dedicated to Napa Valleys oldest Wine Estates, the number of wineries that you would find dating back to the 1800s would be surprisingly small. Stags Leap Winery would certainly make the list with vines planted in 1872, and the first vintage in 1893. By 1895 they produced 40,000 gallons annually from the areas rich terroir. Their flagship wine, The Leap is composed from the best barrels, from their best vineyard blocks. And at 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2014 is massively structured with micro-layers of espresso roast, inky dark berries, graphite and exotic spice. Reaping the rewards of 20 months in oak barrels before winemaker Christophe Paubert hand selects the most expressive barrels to create this limited bottling. At under $100/btl you may want to jump on this right away.

Recognized for its unique soils, composed of clay sediments and volcanic deposits, Stags Leap District was Napa Valleys first AVA. The area is particularly revered for growing Cabernet Sauvignon and shares a home with notable wineries Shafer, Odette, Regusci and Cliff Lede to name a few. If you love full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon with plenty of personality, this one is for you.

Review:

Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Helena Dakota Vineyard was aged for 12 months in 100% new French oak. Deep garnet-purple in color, it has a profound yet slightly broody nose to begin, slowly unfurling to reveal wonderfully fragrant notes of wild blueberries, black cherries, dark chocolate and warm cassis, followed by nuances of garrigue, violets, tar and licorice plus a touch of wet stones. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has gorgeous velvety tannins and finely knit freshness supporting generous black and blue fruits, finishing very long and achingly fragrant. Wow. 1,000 cases were made.

Ancien Chardonnay Carneros is made from 100 percent Chardonnay.

Chardonnay Carneros owes its style, depth, and structure to intensely flavored, low yielding, heirloom clones growing in two Carneros vineyards: on the Napa side, the Toyon Farm and on the Sonoma side, the Sangiacomo Vella Ranch. Ancien Wines hand-selected the cuttings themselves, from older vineyards in the Carneros area. These cuttings are reputed to have origins tracing to Paul Masson who imported them from Burgundy in the early 1940s, from Louis Latour’s renowned Corton Charlemagne vineyard. These selections are often referred to as Old Wenteor Robert Young, denoting the sourced mother blocks in the 1960s.
