Silver Oak Cabernet 2017

Silver Oak Napa Valley

Silver Oak 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley

Silver Oak was started in 1972 with a simple driving philosophy – to focus production on only one varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon. What’s more, they resolved to create a wine with a style all its own: not another hard, tannic red wine requiring years of aging to enjoy, but a wine of fully developed flavors and a velvety soft texture on the day it is released for sale.

Silver Oak produces Cabernet Sauvignon from two appellations. Their Napa Valley derives its fruit from both owned and contracted vineyards, and is produced entirely at their Oakville winery. Beginning in 1994, small amounts of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot have been included in their Napa blend to add complexity and softness.

Silver Oak also produces stellar Cabernet from their Alexander Valley vineyards. A critical reason for the success of this wine, and every wine they make, has always been that they create the final blend before aging it in American oak barrels and then bottles. Over the course of four-and-a-half years, the wines flavors, aromas, and textures have an opportunity to meld with one another and the woods delicate qualities to create the kind of graceful cohesion found only in the world’s most elegant wines.

Silver Oak is one of the most consistent, high-quality producers of Cabernet Sauvignon domestically, continuously delivering in their distinctive style of age-worthy Cabernets with extravagant levels of sweet black fruits, vanilla, and savory elements. The winery was born out of a dairy barn in 1972, and to this day, Silver Oaks driving philosophy behind the wines is that their best bottle of wine is yet to be made, which is hard to imagine if youve ever enjoyed their wines over the years.

The overall blend of the wine changes with each seasons conditions, and the 2017 vintage combines just over 80% Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec. Silver Oaks distinctive style comes by aging their Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon for an impressive 24 months in American oak barrels and two more years in the bottle before release. The extended barrel aging and time in the bottle results in a wine with beautifully integrated flavors thats ready to drink now and will stand the test of time.

Bonterras reputation in the beverage trade can be distilled into two major points: first, theyre committed to producing quality wines, and second, they were organic before it was cool. Yes, even as far back as 1987, Bonterra has made their wines without using pesticides. The extra effort is evident in their 2018 cabernet, an inspired feat from the originators of organic vino.

Expect flavors of cherry, plum, and spice with pretty oak notes tinged with vanilla. The wine has a hearty structure with soft acidity and a fresh finish.

From its ancestral homeland in southwest France, to the sun-drenched vineyards of California and Washington, to emerging footholds in Tuscany, Australia, and South Africa, cabernet sauvignon stakes a fair claim as the most beloved wine grape in the world. A recent study revealed that its now the worlds most widely-planted grape variety, up from fourth place as recently as 1990 .

Besides consumer preference shifting toward so-called varietal wines, another cause for cabernet sauvignons meteoric rise is that its relatively easy to grow the grape berries are known for their thick skin and natural ability to flourish in a wide range of climates. More important than its ease of cultivation, however, is the fact that cabernet sauvignon is simply delicious. Bold and sturdy, with satisfying dark fruit flavors and big tannic character, its a crowd-pleasing favorite thats almost never absent from a restaurant wine list .

Mother Nature made a memorable impression on the 2017 vintage. In January, we welcomed epic winter rains that brought an end to the enduring five-year drought. The generous precipitation filled our water tables and woke up the vines. After an average bud break, prolific shoot and vegetation growth early in the season required close observation and much weed control and leafing to open the dense canopies. Bloom proceeded at a steady pace and set us up for a healthy crop size. In June and July, three extended heat events tested our vineyard team and culminated with high temperatures around Labor Day.

96 Points James Suckling This is a big upgrade in finesse and clarity to such a popular, premium cabernet from Napa. It shows lots of blackberry, tar, cedar and oak-tree aromas that follow through to a full yet toned palate of fine, integrated tannins and a vivid finish. Owner David Duncan explained that the American oak they use in the wine for aging now comes 100% from their own barrel-making facilities, which tones down the vanilla character in the wine. Really impressive and delicious. Its a joy to drink now, but can age.

Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey Finished in Cabernet Sauvignon Casks90 Proof

Please enjoy our IW Harper Cabernet Cask Reserve Bourbon Review!

I.W. Harper Bourbon History

IW Harper whiskey was first produced by the Bernheim Brothers Distillery back in the late 1870s. You may be familiar with the name Bernheim. Theres the Bernheim Distillery in Louisville, KY, where Heaven Hill currently produces its whiskeys, Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest and Bernheim Original Wheat Whiskey, also produced by Heaven Hill. So who was this Bernheim?

Who was this I.W. Bernheim?

Well, Isaac Wolfe Bernheim was a German-Jewish immigrant who first arrived in the US back in 1867. He was not a distiller at the time. He eventually found work as a bookkeeper either for two distillers or a wholesale liquor company, depending on which source you believe. Eventually, after earning enough money, he brought his brother to the US and the two started a distillery of their own, called Bernheim Bros. They eventually started blending whiskey and released a brand of their own.

Whats with the I.W. Harper name?

So why is this brand called I.W. Harper and not I.W. Bernheim? Well, because of the social climate and prejudices at that time, the Bernheim Brothers felt that it was best to have an American sounding name. So I.W. Harper was born.

Review: Richmond Hill Takes Us On Melancholy Colorful Road Trip

Leaving Iowa features Don Faust, left, Leslie Day, Pam Kobre, and Kevin Babbitt.

The new show at Richmond Hill in Geneseo the family-friendly comedy Leaving Iowa is definitely a mixed bag, in good and not so good ways.

The nostalgic memory play by Tim Clue and Spike Manton is set both in the present day and in whiplash-inducing flashbacks the summer of a 1984 during a family vacation from Winterset, Iowa to Hannibal, Mo.

Leaving Iowa focuses on the road trip with the parents and their two kids, and is narrated by the only named character, Don Browning , and he, his sister and mom are played by the same actors in their then-and-now versions. Don is on his own modern-day journey to take his fathers ashes to his childhood home, as well as a way to breach the chasm between himself and Dad.

The kaleidoscopic, affectionate play is billed as a toast to the idealism and character of parents from the greatest generation, and a frantic roast of their dedication to the family road trip. It was nominated Best New Play in the Country by the Detroit Free Press and one of SoCal Theaters 10 Most Memorable Moments of the year after its run at the Laguna Playhouse.

A show suitable for ages 10 to 100, Leaving Iowa is a postcard to anyone who has ever found themselves driving alone on a road, revisiting fond memories of their youth.

We Have Yet To Make Our Best Bottle Of Wine

Silver Oak is timeless. Always indulgent, always a perfect snapshot of the Valley, its a wine that has symbolized Napa Cabernet for five decades nowand to understand why, you dont have to take a trip back in time and imagine what Napa was like when Silver Oak first made its name: All you have to do is take one sip right now.

Silver Oaks 96-point 2017 Napa Cabernet is everything you want Silver Oak to be. Deep ruby, showing bold aromas of blackberry, blueberry, coconut, espresso, and toasted vanilla bean, its opulent yet perfectly poised on the palate, with a flawless balance of supple tannins and refreshing acidity.

Silver Oak has helped drive American interest in fine wine since the 1970sa fact that can explain their ascent but doesnt scratch the surface of what has kept them at the top for nearly 50 years. In fact, their impeccable quality seems to be on cruise control only because of a restless desire to improve.

The teams replanting regimen stretches a quarter-century into the future, and in 2015 they acquired their own cooperage in Higbee, Missouri. That means every drop of Silver Oak Cabernet is aged in an American oak barrel thats been in their control since it was raw lumber.

Now, after two years in their custom-made barrels and another three years in bottle, the wine is drinking beautifully, hitting all the gorgeous notes that we have come to expect from Silver Oak.

Lets go to the left bank of the Gironde River for the most famous expression of cabernet sauvignon on the planet! says Matthew Kaner, host and producer for SOMM TV and the 2013 Food & Wine Sommelier of the Year. Indeed, its hard to imagine a better standard-bearer of old-school cabernet sauvignon than the region of Pauillac, home to some of the most legendary and storied red wine producers in Bordeauxand one producer crafting their cab-dominant blends in a consistently traditional fashion is Château Lynch-Bages.

I love this style of cabernet for having a gentle ripeness of fruit, while also capturing the terroir so well, says Kaner. As Château Lynch-Bages ages, it gains an incredible peatiness, kind of like Islay Scotch! I love it so much.
