Wine Review: Silver Oak, Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

$ 199.00

The inaugural vintage from our LEED Platinum and Living Building-certified Silver Oak winery is ruby in color with a purple rim. Warm and inviting, it has notes of red currant, cassis, ripe plum, cardamom and toffee. Theres depth and weight on the palatea harmonious intensity. This wine has a long and beautiful finish, and its fine tannins will provide drinking pleasure through 2043 with proper cellaring. 95.5% Cabernet Sauvignon 3.6% Merlot 0.5% Cabernet Franc 0.3% Petit Verdot 0.1% Malbec

Mother Nature made a memorable impression on the 2017 vintage. In January, we welcomed epic winter rains that brought an end to the enduring five-year drought. The generous precipitation filled our water tables and woke up the vines. After an average bud break, prolific shoot and vegetation growth early in the season required close observation and much weed control and leafing to open the dense canopies. Bloom proceeded at a steady pace and set us up for a healthy crop size. In June and July, three extended heat events tested our vineyard team and culminated with high temperatures around Labor Day.

The 14 is ALL THAT. Everything you know and love about Silver Oak, turned up to 10. Lush, hedonistic Cabernet fruit, licorice, cigar box and mocha flavors all in a finely-tuned, succulent structure. Impossible to not drink right now! Though as many of you know, it has the stuffing to age too!

Heres the winery take on it: Our 2014 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon has an opaque crimson color with a purplish hue. The alluring nose draws you in with notes of cassis, black cherry, pipe tobacco, salted caramel, cocoa beans and fresh strawberry. This full-bodied wine enters with a depth of flavor and offers mouth-coating, velvety tannins and flavors of cream soda and red fruit. Black currant and vanilla notes crescendo through the palate to the lengthy finish. This wine is drinkable upon release, but given proper cellaring conditions can be enjoyed through 2040.

Silver Oak Napa Valley

Silver Oak was started in 1972 with a simple driving philosophy to focus production on only one varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon. Whats more, they resolved to create a wine with a style all its own: not another hard, tannic red wine requiring years of aging to enjoy, but a wine of fully developed flavors and a velvety soft texture on the day it is released for sale.

Silver Oak produces Cabernet Sauvignon from two appellations. Their Napa Valley derives its fruit from both owned and contracted vineyards, and is produced entirely at their Oakville winery. Beginning in 1994, small amounts of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot have been included in their Napa blend to add complexity and softness.

Silver Oak also produces stellar Cabernet from their Alexander Valley vineyards. A critical reason for the success of this wine, and every wine they make, has always been that they create the final blend before aging it in American oak barrels and then bottles. Over the course of four-and-a-half years, the wines flavors, aromas, and textures have an opportunity to meld with one another and the woods delicate qualities to create the kind of graceful cohesion found only in the worlds most elegant wines.

It All Began With a HandshakeSilver Oak began over a handshake between two friends with a bold vision: focus on one varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon, aged exclusively in American oak and worthy of cellaring for decades to come.

Our FoundersRaymond Twomey Duncan, a Colorado entrepreneur who began investing in California vineyards in the late 1960s, and Justin Meyer, a winemaker and former Christian Brother, began in a Napa Valley dairy barn in 1972, producing only 1,100 cases of their inaugural vintage.

Over the next two decades, Silver Oak grew in popularity. Our Napa Valley and Alexander Valley Cabernets sold quickly upon their release from the winery and became a sought-after staple on restaurant wine lists around the country. After selecting Daniel Baron to succeed him as winemaker in 1994, Justin retired, selling his share of Silver Oak to the Duncan family in 2001.

With David R. Duncan serving as President and CEO and Tim Duncan as Executive Vice President, the Duncan family continues to operate the winery to this day.

We RebuildIn 2006, a fire destroyed our historic Oakville winery. It was a difficult and emotional event but in hindsight, a blessing in disguise. When we regrouped on the morning of the fire, we knew we had to rebuild, and it wasnt long before the excitement of a new, state-of-the-art winery overcame our sense of loss.

Silver Oak has helped drive American interest in fine wine since the 1970sa fact that can explain their ascent but doesnt scratch the surface of what has kept them at the top for nearly 50 years. Review: Richmond Hill Takes Us On Melancholy Colorful Road Trip

Leaving Iowa features Don Faust, left, Leslie Day, Pam Kobre, and Kevin Babbitt.

The new show at Richmond Hill in Geneseo the family-friendly comedy Leaving Iowa is definitely a mixed bag, in good and not so good ways.

The nostalgic memory play by Tim Clue and Spike Manton is set both in the present day and in whiplash-inducing flashbacks the summer of a 1984 during a family vacation from Winterset, Iowa to Hannibal, Mo.

Leaving Iowa focuses on the road trip with the parents and their two kids, and is narrated by the only named character, Don Browning , and he, his sister and mom are played by the same actors in their then-and-now versions. Don is on his own modern-day journey to take his fathers ashes to his childhood home, as well as a way to breach the chasm between himself and Dad.

The kaleidoscopic, affectionate play is billed as a toast to the idealism and character of parents from the greatest generation, and a frantic roast of their dedication to the family road trip. It was nominated Best New Play in the Country by the Detroit Free Press and one of SoCal Theaters 10 Most Memorable Moments of the year after its run at the Laguna Playhouse.

A show suitable for ages 10 to 100, Leaving Iowa is a postcard to anyone who has ever found themselves driving alone on a road, revisiting fond memories of their youth.

From its ancestral homeland in southwest France, to the sun-drenched vineyards of California and Washington, to emerging footholds in Tuscany, Australia, and South Africa, cabernet sauvignon stakes a fair claim as the most beloved wine grape in the world. A recent study revealed that its now the worlds most widely-planted grape variety, up from fourth place as recently as 1990 .

Besides consumer preference shifting toward so-called varietal wines, another cause for cabernet sauvignons meteoric rise is that its relatively easy to grow the grape berries are known for their thick skin and natural ability to flourish in a wide range of climates. More important than its ease of cultivation, however, is the fact that cabernet sauvignon is simply delicious. Bold and sturdy, with satisfying dark fruit flavors and big tannic character, its a crowd-pleasing favorite thats almost never absent from a restaurant wine list .
