How Does Limestone Affect The Quality Of A Wine

Wine of the Week – 3.22.21

Limestone soil often boosts the quality flavor of a wine.

The levels of nutrients in limestone soils offer the vines a chance to produce sweet and concentrated berries. This, combined with other factors, will result in the wine being highly concentrated in fruit, flavor and sugar.

The ability to develop high levels of flavor stems from the fact that calcium-rich soils allow the vine roots to bury deep into the layers of soil, which offers the vines a range of different flavors and largely adds to the quality the vines produce.

These Days If Youre Drinking An Aussie Wine Theres A 50 Percent Chance That Its From South Australia As The Countrys Primary Wine

The weather extremes that come with El Niño can batter South Australian vineyards with rain, drought, and brush fires. Still, in good years and with an adept, attentive, and detail-oriented winemaker, lush and expressive wines can be coaxed out of the unrelenting heat.

While Shirazincreasingly labeled Syrah, at high-quality levels is still the king grape variety, while Chardonnay is running a close second.

Within the vast South Australia region, several smaller areas have been able to master their own set of varieties and wine styles. While some wineries in these regions are known for their famous bulk wines, there is a significant shift in focus on producing premium wines instead.

Is Limestone A Type Of Soil

Yes, Limestone is a type of soil.

Limestone soils predominantly consist of Calcium Carbonate, which evidently adds generous amounts of calcium to the earth. Additionally, Limestone is made up of clay, silt and dolomite.

The significance of Limestone is its ability to balance soils that are nutrient deficient especially with an unbalanced PH. It not only neutralizes acidity in the soil but is also able to extract vital nutrients in the soil.

Furthermore, the soil is able to retain necessary amounts of water in the dry summer days and is also able to offer good drainage during the rainy seasons. This retention and drainage ability means that the soils have to be irrigated using the drip-irrigation system. Although countries likeAustralia use this system in some instances, countries like France forbids any sort of irrigation.

An intense, layered nose that is packed with with an array of dark fruits. Plum, blackberry and star anise with a dusting of dark chocolate. The palate is intense and long supported by generous savory tannins that coat the mouth. A delicious contemporary Cabernet. There are currently no reviews of this product. Elegant, showing appealing, firm earthy notes to the star anise, green cardamom and cigar box spiciness, with a touch of Dutch cocoa powder. Reveals spiced plum, cassis and kirsch flavors that are plump and velvety, with a long finish. Satisfying. The fruit is everything from pepperberries, blackberries, mulberries, some cassis, licorice, aniseed, fennel flower, flat-leaf parsley and bay leaf. In the mouth the wine is decidedly red fruited, straying into the raspberry and pomegranate space. Delicious drinking for the price, and immaculate packaging to boot. Compelling. This is a bright, youthful cabernet with aromas of plums, redcurrants, tobacco and earth. Picked early for freshness. Medium-bodied with little oak impact, a red-plum core and a juicy, drinkable feel.

The 2019 Penley Estate Phoenix Cabernet Sauvignon opens with lots of complex notes on the nose – licorice, black tea, some iron like minerality, plum and blackberry plus touches of spice, anise and chocolate too.

The medium-bodied wine tastes silky and smooth and is quite good. It’s definitely more on the elegant side of things for Cabernet as it has very little oak influence which really lets you appreciate the pure grape.

Dusty tannins lead into the dry, quite long and savory finish. This is good stuff!
