These Days If Youre Drinking An Aussie Wine Theres A 50 Percent Chance That Its From South Australia As The Countrys Primary Wine
The weather extremes that come with El Niño can batter South Australian vineyards with rain, drought, and brush fires. Still, in good years and with an adept, attentive, and detail-oriented winemaker, lush and expressive wines can be coaxed out of the unrelenting heat.
While Shirazincreasingly labeled Syrah, at high-quality levels is still the king grape variety, while Chardonnay is running a close second.
Within the vast South Australia region, several smaller areas have been able to master their own set of varieties and wine styles. While some wineries in these regions are known for their famous bulk wines, there is a significant shift in focus on producing premium wines instead.

What Kind Of Wine Is Shiraz
Shiraz is any wine made from the grape variety of the same name. People often ask what Shiraz wine is? Or what is Syrah wine? The answer is simple: theyre the same thing.
Generally, when the grape is grown in Australia, its called Shiraz. When its grown in France, it goes by the name Syrah. Everywhere else, the decision of what to call the wine is often based on whether its produced in an Australian style or in a French one . But Shiraz, Shiraz wine, Syrah, and Syrah wine all refer to wine crafted from the same grape variety.

Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz 2020
Notify me when back in stock
Bin 389 is often referred to as Poor Mans Grange or Baby Grange, in part because components of the wine are matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange. First made in 1960, by the legendary Max Schubert, this was the wine that helped to forge Penfolds solid reputation with red wine drinkers. Combining the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with the richness of Shiraz, Bin 389 also exemplifies the judicious balance of fruit and oak.
Grapes sourced from Padthaway, McLaren Vale and the Barossa Valley. 51% cabernet sauvignon, 49% shiraz. 12 months in American oak, 33% new. Such a solid, svelte release, as seamless and accessible as Ive seen a new-release Bin 389 though with the tannin and overall stuffing to go long term. Theres as much plum as blackcurrant here, as much finesse as grunt, though perhaps its most distinguishing trait is the exceptional length though the finish. The palate is plush, the finish is drenched in both flavour and tannin, and yet everything here feels meticulous. Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz
Other Reviews….A blend of cabernet sauvignon and shiraz sourced from vineyards in McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley and Padthway. Matured for 12 months in American hogsheads . Coming back to this Australian battler after Penfold’s Napa and Bordeaux trials was something of a rude shock in the first instance. This is big, bold, beautiful and quintessentially Australian. It makes no apologies for its wealth of black fruits, almost succulent tannins, and vanillin oak. Drink by 2040.95 PointsJames Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion
Very rich, ripe and intense, this has plenty of depth and is one of the strongest statements of Penfolds house style. Rich vanillin and sweetly spicy American oak on the nose, with chocolate, blueberry, violet, blackberry and iodine notes. The palate delivers quite approachable and supple texture, smoothly fleshy and inviting. Flavors of blackberry, blackcurrant and mulberry abound. Deep and ripe finish with nutty tannins to close. A blend of McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley and Padthaway. Drink or hold. Screw cap.96 PointsJamesSuckling.com
How Is Shiraz Made
Shiraz is made like every other wine: the grapes are harvested, usually selected for quality, and crushed. The juice is then fermented into wine. However, sparkling Shiraz is given an extra winemaking step where its put through a secondary fermentation that results in carbon dioxide dissolving into the wine, making it fizzy.

What Are Popular Brands Of Syrah
There are so many! But no discussion of Australian Shiraz is complete without mention of Yellow Tail Shiraz, and no review of French Syrah is complete without mention of the great appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley, like Cornas, St.-Joseph, Hermitage, and more. Syrah is also typically an essential part of the blend in delicious wines labeled Côtes du Rhône.
Some of the most popular brands of Shiraz or Syrah we carry include:
Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz 2020 South Australia
Australia has become almost synonymous in the U.S. with inexpensive, fruit-driven wines adequate but not especially exciting, and less interesting than many from Spain, France, and Italy in the under-$20 category.
This may be why Australia doesnt have the buzz of other wine regions. But at the higher end, Australia produces some fabulous wines that show plenty of dimension.
One of them is the 2020 Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz from Penfolds, the venerable winery most celebrated for its Grange Hermitage, the Shiraz-based classic that is Australias answer to first growth Bordeaux and sells for prices that can reach into the four figures.

What Is The Proper Way To Serve Shiraz
As with all red wine, it shouldnt be served chilled , but 15 minutes in the fridge before serving the wine will tend to make the fruit seem a bit fresher.
The proper glass for Shiraz or Syrah is a standard red wine glass. This also goes for blends like Shiraz Cabernet and Grenache Syrah. Basically, all Shiraz red wine, and related red blends, should be served this way.

Bin 389, a perennial overachiever in any vintage. Indeed, a very good follow on to the 2018 Bin 389.
