Miller High Life Beer Returns To Its Champagne Roots
Miller High Lifes slogan,the Champagne of Beers is one of the most recognizable marketing phrases in the world. Our dads grew up with it and so did we.
So its no surprise that the now Molson Coors owned brand is returning to its legendary motto in a new video that taps into the concept that champagne is often used to christen aircraft carriers, steamers, yachts and other grand vessels.
So why not a grill?
The campaign is inspired by a Champagne tradition, but were applying it to how consumers enjoy High Life and the role of High Life in their lives, celebrating those everyday achievements with The Champagne of Beers, Lucy Bloxam, marketing manager for Miller High Life told Beer & Beyond.
The 15-second ad features a woman putting the finishing touches on a grill shes assembled, then clinking bottles of High Life with her partner. Every grill deserves a christening, a voiceover states. Do it right with The Champagne of Beers.
The new ad is inspired by the series of spots created by famed film director Errol Morris, who made dozens of spots for Miller High Life between 1998 and 2005 celebrating The High Life Man.
The new spot Grill Dedication tips its hat to Morris style, but with a twist, Bloxam says. Instead of an anonymous Miller High Life drinker, we see the main characters face. And unlike the everyman favored in Morris work, the lead is a woman.
The Surprisingly Legit Reasons Miller High Life Is Called The Champagne Of Beers
Among the more optimistic advertising slogans lies Miller High LifesThe Champagne of Beers assertion. Its so bold it reads almost as a dare, like when a celebrity self-identifies as down-to-earth in an interview aboard a private plane. Millers Champagne dreams, however, are surprisingly grounded in reality.
When Miller introduced the lager, in 1903, bottled beer was a rarity. Most turn-of-the-century drinkers could only purchase beer in taverns. They either consumed it on-site, or toted it home in wood or metal pails, as a sort of proto-growler system.
High Life debuted on New Years Eve 1903 in clear glass bottles designed to showcase the beers clarity. The elongated necks were deliberately modeled after Champagne bottles. Also, at various times throughout its history and especially early on, High Life had ornate foil that covered the cap and top of the neck similar to the way Champagne is sold, Charlie Hosale, archivist at the MillerCoors brewery in Milwaukee, said in a 2015 interview.
Miller Replaces High Life In Champagne Bottles With Festive Packaging This Year

Its unclear if the celebratory packaging will return in the future.
The bottles were first launched as a test in the Chicago market in 2016. The next year, the Milwaukee area got them, too. The big bottles, which sold for around $3.49, went national in 2018.
They were also released in 2019 and 2020, but not this year.
“Instead of Champagne bottles this year, we opted for holiday-themed packaging with the festive tagline, Holiday Cheers with The Champagne of Beers,” says spokesman Marty Maloney.
“The packs also have QR codes on them, which people can scan to enter a sweepstakes for free High Life for a year.”
The discontinuation comes on the heels of the Miller Valley being officially dubbed The Champagne of Beer Region in June by the Milwaukee Common Council.
As far as whether you’ll see the Champagne-style bottles again, it seems as though the door hasn’t closed. Never say never.
In other High Life news, the gingerbread dive bar sets that were released on Monday sold out immediately.
According to a spokesperson for Molson Coors, the sets sold out within two minutes of going on sale.

High school students, vagrants, and thrifty hipsters can all agree on one thing: Miller High Life is delicious and cost-efficient. High Life rivals Pabst Blue Ribbon and Keystone Light for the dubious distinction of America’s cheapest beer. Their 32 ounce cans, which are roughly the size of a rocket-propelled grenade, retail for $1.50 at Walgreens and many NOLA gas stations. That means a six pack’s worth of booze will run you under $4 .Now, they’re introducing another unique way to live the High Life. Miller’s oldest brand has decided to solidify its claim to the title of “The Champagne of Beers.” The slogan was a reference to High Life’s golden color and over-the-top bubbliness, and the beverage was actually originally marketed in miniature champagne bottles. Miller is now introducing High Life in a new receptacle modeled after the traditional shape of a champagne bottle, just in time for your “classy” New Year’s Eve party. The bottles will hold 750 ml, or 25 oz., somewhat less than the big-boy cans, but with an infinitely more upscale presentation. So far, the bottles are only available in the Chicago area and online, but if Chicago prices are accurate nationwide, this is a pretty cheap souvenir- they’re running for only $2.00. That’s about the same price as a 25 oz. can, leaving those living the High Life no excuse for not upgrading their aesthetic.

Miller High Life Is Selling Beer In Actual Champagne Bottles
Miller High Life is taking a literal approach to its slogan The Champagne of Beers this holiday season. The company has just released limited edition, 750-milliliter bottles adorned with gold foil in Chicago and Milwaukee. A red band that reads High Life the Champagne of Beers, wraps around the gold foil at the neck of the bottle, and the label displays the beers iconic Girl in the Moon.
Miller tested the 750-milliliter bottles last year in Chicago, and has expanded into the Milwaukee market. Its a perfect shareable bottle, and we know the holidays are all about sharing beers and fun times with family and friends, says Miller High Lifes brand manager Taylor Brown. This is a way to remind drinkers we truly are the Champagne of Beers.
When the company released the first bottles last year in Chicago, retailers ran out in a matter of weeks. The Champagne-like bottles were popular enough to prompt Miller to release them in Milwaukee, where High Life debuted on December 30th, 1903.
Miller High Life Champagne bottles sell for $1.99 a piece or $22.99 for a 12-pack. If you dont live in Chicago or Milwaukee, dont fret. If sales are successful this year, Miller plans on expanding the release of the limited edition bottles in 2018.
