The Californian wine country is in the North San Francisco Bay area, with over 800 wineries located all along this scenic route. The Bay area encompasses some of the world’s most famous wine regions, including Napa Valley and Sonoma.

Starting any new wine business can be challenging, but Shark Tank’s Kevin O’Leary feels he has one definite advantage over the competition. “Millions of people see me on television as the wine guy,” says the entrepreneur, “I started off curating wines for my friends to becoming the largest purveyor of wine on QVC.” O’Leary’s new site, Shop Mr. Wonderful, features over 55 wines from his partnership with Vintage Wine Estates. I spoke with O’Leary about the site, his favorite wines and why he feels he brings more than the money to the table in any investment.

What was your first exposure to wines?

My father passed away when I was very young and my family moved every two years with my stepfather. In Europe wines are served at the family table and this period introduced me to so many varietals. I didn’t know the differences at that age, but I became very interested. Eventually I became a wine collector and have five commercial cellars around the world where I buy, store and invest.

Which Wine Regions Are In California

From North to South, the main regions are Mendocino, Lake, Napa Valley, Sonoma, Livermore Valley, Lodi, Sierra Foothills, Santa Cruz Mountains, Monterey, Paso Robles and Santa Barbara.

California is a vast region that consists of several smaller wine-producing areas. Although Napa Valley and Sonoma are what California is most known for, the states other regions produce equally outstanding wines.

Napa Valley and Paso Robles are renowned for the bold reds of Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel, as well as the scenic wine route which offers unique experiences to wine lovers. You can definitely say that this is a Chardonnay with personalityand the personality associated with it is tv celebrity Kevin OLeary or Mr Wonderful of Shark Tank fame! I have very high expectations for this Kevin OLeary Fine Wines Russian River Valley Chardonnay 2017 because if Mr Wonderful has put his name on it, it must be amazing! These grapes were grown in a climate that Chardonnay love bestvery hot days when the grapes are evolving and cool, foggy nights when the grapes can rest. Once harvested, the juice spent 12 months sur lie, aging in French oak barrels. Sur Lie is the technique of aging the juice along with the yeast and other particles that came from the harvest. The result is usually a wine that is creamier in texture with nutty, yeasty, or bread flavors. This is 100% Chardonnay all from the Russian River in Sonoma County, California.
