Description

For more than 30 years, the wines of J. Lohr Estates have been consumer favorites. Carefully crafted in a food-friendly, balanced style, they flavorfully reflect their Monterey and Paso Robles origins. By harvesting and blending multiple vineyard sites, J. Lohr Estates wines showcase the best of each vintage. The ability to draw upon and blend from our various pioneering properties in Monterey and Paso Robles is key to J. Lohr Estates long track record of exceptional quality. Our original cabernet blocks in Paso Robles were planted among a stand of majestic oak trees, which still thrive today. Since its debut in 1987, Seven Oaks has proudly represented Paso Robles on shelves and wine lists across the country. Ripe fruit aromas of black cherry and currant are accented by notes of toasted pastry and dark roast coffee from the authentic barrel bouquet. Persistent high-toned red fruit strikes the palate, followed by bright acidity and a structure that is both dense and soft at once.

Aromas of shaved cocoa and red cherry jam meet with a bit of smoke on the nose of this widely available yet reliable bottling. There is ample tension on the sip, giving the big-boned flavors of black cherry, incense and smoke the tannic edges to cling to. Matt Kettmann

82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Petite Sirah, 4% Petit Verdot, 3% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc and 1% Syrah from Paso Robles, California. The wine was aged for 12 months in 60-gallon American oak barrels, 18.5% new, and has just 1.9 g/L of residual sugar.

This wine has an SRP around $17 and is available for as low as $12, including at many Costco and Trader Joe’s locations.

Our family winegrowing and winemaking passion is rooted in our sustainably farmed vineyards and in our winery in Paso Robles, California. The oak-studded terroir and calcareous soils couple with warm days and cool nights to develop intense character, exemplified in our Seven Oaks’ velvety richness and supple tannins. Dense and soft, this wine boasts ripe flavors of black currant and cherry, enhanced by a bouquet of vanilla and spice from one year of barrel aging, and is an excellent companion to grilled beef, lasagna, or dark chocolate.

Produced and Bottled by J. Lohr Winery13.9% Alcohol

The 2019 J. Lohr Seven Oaks Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon begins with quite an attractive aroma of black cherry, baking spice, cola, licorice, mocha and vanilla. There’s lots to sniff here so take your time and swirl away.

The wine tastes similar to the nose with lots of oak influence including a little tobacco and coffee but it’s also soft, smooth and juicy in the mouth. This is a great burger wine.

Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon

As Paso Robles, California has soared in number of wineries and gained in popularity, Cabernet Sauvignon has firmly taken root as the regions number one varietal. Alone, it accounts for just over 40% of plantings and is grown throughout both the western and eastern sides of the appellation. Though viticulture here dates back to the 18th century, Cabernet Sauvignon didnt emerge as a significant grape here until the 1970s. But since then it has definitely made up for lost time.

Legendary winemaker and consultant Andre Tchelistcheff first recognized Pasos potential with Cabernet Sauvignon in the early 1960s. The calcareous soil and dramatic diurnal temperature changes of Pasos westside particularly intrigued him. Today modern winemaking techniques and focused experimentation with various clones, rootstocks and vineyard strategies optimize the region’s ideal combination of soil and climate to deliver the best fruit possible.

The results are evident in the glass. Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon can be mesmerizing, with rich aromas and flavors of blackberry, cassis, black cherry, graphite, toasty oak, vanilla and spice. The structure, balance and unbridled opulence of these wines impress from first sip to last. Not surprisingly, Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignons have steadily grown in reputation, not just in the U.S., but around the world.

J Lohr Cabernet Sauvignon Wine Review

The cork was in quite tight and barely any wine had penetrated it.

In the glass, J Lohr Cabernet Sauvignon was a deep purple color and it appeared thick and hearty. Swirling the wine revealed large bubbles of wine suspended in the glass.

On the nose, the wine was very aromatic. Some alcohol was noticed but the primary aromas were of violets and cherry. According to the bottle you may also notice hints of blueberry and vanilla. Also, the aroma was noticed from afar. Overall, quite pleasant.

J Lohr Cabernet Sauvignon alcohol content 13.5% by volume per the bottle.

The wines taste gave forth a well balanced flavor of pure Cabernet Sauvignon. Overtones of dark cherry and perhaps even a hint of sage or maybe toasted wood were also noticed.

Firm mid tongue tannins were felt, as promised by the bottle. The mouthfeel was velvety in texture.

The finish was medium length and enjoyable.

Overall, J Lohr Cabernet Sauvignon was a great straightforward and uncomplicated Cabernet Sauvignon. Definitely drinkable now and likely even better with age.

My favorite element was the lofty aroma.

For a pairing, consider the bottles suggestion of grilled or roasted red meats. This is a great steak wine. Give it a go!

J Lohr Cabernet Sauvignon price about $21.99.
