Tweak Your Bathroom Habits

Two Red Wines Supporting Prostate Cancer Research – Indiegogo

One of the simplest things you can do for the bothersome urinary symptoms of an enlarged prostate is change some of your bathroom habits.

Make sure you urinate as soon as you feel the need to go and that you empty your bladder completely each time you go. This will reduce the number of trips you need to make to the bathroom, both day and night.

Michigan Medicine offers the following tips to make it easier to fully empty your bladder when you have BPH:

  • Relax as much as possible before you urinate. As we mentioned earlier, anxiety can make it even more difficult to urinate, so try not to worry about your symptoms and consider meditation for a few minutes or doing some deep breathing.
  • Don’t rush. Give yourself plenty of time in the bathroom.
  • Consider sitting on the toilet instead of standing, to help you relax.
  • Turn on a faucet or visualize running water this may help get your urine flowing.
  • Read or think of other things while you urinate, to help you stay relaxed.
  • Try “double voiding,” when you urinate as much as possible, relax for a few moments, then urinate again.

The Positive Effects Of Coffee

Milan Geybels, a previous student at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and lead author of the study, says the results of this study differ from those of other studies looking at the same link, as the researchers used a composite definition of prostate cancer recurrence/progression. He adds:

We used detailed information on follow-up prostate-specific antigen levels, use of secondary treatment for prostate cancer and data from scans and biopsies to assess the occurrence of metastases and cause-specific mortality during follow up.

Using these detailed data, we could determine whether a patient had evidence of prostate cancer recurrence or progression.

Additionally, the study also revealed that biological activities that are therefore linked to the consumption of phytochemical compounds that are found in coffee could practically exhibit both anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.

These are the main characteristic derived from the consumption of coffee that is very helpful to prostate health.

The researchers also mentioned that the phytochemical compounds present include the following functions in the body. The naturally-occurring compounds are discussed below:

  • Caffeine, which can inhibit cell growth and encourage apoptosis.
  • Diterpenes cafestol and kahweol, which can inhibit cancer growth.
  • Chlorogenic acid, which can inhibit DNA methylation.

Researchers have found that men who drink an average of four to seven glasses of red wine per week are only 52% as likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer as those who do not drink red wine, reports the June 2007 issue of Harvard Mens Health Watch. In addition, red wine appears particularly protective against advanced or aggressive cancers.

Researchers in Seattle collected information about many factors that might influence the risk of prostate cancer in men between ages 40 and 64, including alcohol consumption. At first the results for alcohol consumption seemed similar to the findings of many earlier studies: There was no relationship between overall consumption and risk.

But the scientists went one step further by evaluating each type of alcoholic beverage independently. Here the news was surprisingwine drinking was linked to a reduced risk of prostate cancer. And when white wine was compared with red, red had the most benefit. Even low amounts seemed to help, and for every additional glass of red wine per week, the relative risk declined by 6%.

Can Alcohol Mask Symptoms Of Prostate Cancer

Testing for elevated levels of prostate-specific antigen in blood plasma is one of the techniques used for diagnosing prostate cancer. A study on Alcohol Consumption and PSA-detected Prostate Cancer Risk by NIH researchers found that excessive drinking can depress PSA levels, thus reducing the reliability of PSA based tests for heavy drinkers. Therefore, if the patient has a history of heavy drinking, other techniques like biopsy and medical imaging must be used to diagnose prostate cancer.

Heavy drinking can also contribute to many symptoms that overlap with prostate cancer. This can mask prostate cancer symptoms, make them worse, or potentially delay receiving appropriate treatment. These overlapping symptoms are:

  • More frequent urination at night and weak urine flow
  • Erectile dysfunction

The prostate is a walnut-sized gland that forms part of the male reproductive system. The gland is made of two lobes, or regions, enclosed by an outer layer of tissue. It is located just below the bladder, where urine is stored. The prostate also surrounds the urethra, the canal through which urine passes out of the body.

As a man matures, the prostate goes through two main periods of growth. The first occurs early in puberty, when the prostate doubles in size. At around age 25, the gland begins to grow again. This second growth phase often results, years later, in enlarged prostate or benign prostatic hyperplasia .

Though the prostate continues to grow during most of a man’s life, the enlargement doesn’t usually cause problems until late in life. BPH rarely causes symptoms before age 40, but more than half of men in their sixties and as many as 90 percent in their seventies and eighties have some symptoms of BPH.

Many symptoms of BPH stem from obstruction of the urethra and gradual loss of bladder function, which results in incomplete emptying of the bladder. The symptoms of BPH vary, but the most common ones involve changes or problems with urination, such as

  • a hesitant, interrupted, weak stream
  • urgency and leaking or dribbling
  • more frequent urination, especially at night

Cuts Multiple Cancer Risks

Breast Cancer

Red grapes are the fruit best able to suppress the activity of aromatase, the enzyme used by breast tumors to produce their own estrogen this is called an aromatase inhibitor. Red wine may serve as a nutritional aromatase inhibitor, which may ameliorate the elevated breast cancer risk associated with alcohol intake. Note that you can also eat red grapes those with seeds are especially helpful. Resveratrol is also thought to kill cancer cells by cutting off a pathway that feeds cancer cells.

Colon Cancer

Studies show that moderate consumption of red wine can reduce the risk of colon cancer by 50%.

Prostate Cancer

Harvard Mens Health Watch reports that men who drink an average of four to seven glasses of red wine per week have a 52% less chance of being diagnosed with prostate cancer compared to those who dont drink wine. Red wine appears particularly protective against advanced or aggressive cancers. Doctors speculate that flavonoids and resveratrol contain potent antioxidants and may counterbalance androgens, the male hormones that stimulate the prostate.

Are There Any Other Beverages Or Foods I Should Steer Clear Of Or Add To My Diet

Any other diuretics can stimulate the tissues of an already overactive bladder, including coffee and tea. While increasing fluid intake can help against lower UTI’s as it flushes the system out, it’s important to strike a balance where it doesn’t increase your urinary frequency too much when you’re already suffering from BPH.

Green tea has been shown to have benefits that protects against BPH due to its anti-inflammatory properties. In a blend with black tea, it was shown to increase the flow rate of urine, improve one’s sexual function and quality of life.

High-protein diets sourced mainly from animal proteins can also increase your risk of developing an enlarged prostate, so considering plant-based proteins may reduce your risk. Foods worth considering include those rich in lycopene, such as tomatoes, an antioxidant that helps with prostate health due to the high concentration of this substance in prostate tissues. Studies have shown it has the ability to slow the progression of BPH and improve symptoms as per the International Prostate Symptom Score questionnaire. A prospective cohort study demonstrated that those who consumed more tomato products, including sauce, experienced a 23% reduced risk of developing prostate cancer.

Researchers from Seattles Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center found men who drink four to seven glasses of red wine a week are only 52 percent as likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer as those who dont drink red wine.

The report, published in the June 2007 issue of Harvard Mens Health Watch, was based on a small study examining the risk of prostate cancer in 1,456 men aged between 40 and 64, including alcohol consumption.

At first the results for alcohol consumption seemed similar to the findings of many earlier studies — there was no relationship between overall consumption and risk, said the researchers in a statement.

But the scientists went one step further by evaluating each type of alcoholic beverage independently. Here the news was surprising — wine drinking was linked to a reduced risk of prostate cancer.

Staging And Survival Rates

If doctors can catch prostate cancer early, it usually responds well to treatment.

Staging is a system that helps doctors determine how far cancer has spread in the body. There are three tiers of staging for prostate cancer:

  • local, when cancer cells are only present in the prostate
  • regional, meaning that cancer cells have spread to nearby areas of the body
  • distant, in cases where cancer cells have spread throughout the body

Survival rates are an approximate measure that can give a person some information about how likely their treatment is to be successful.

A 5-year relative survival rate denotes the percentage of people who live for at least 5 years after diagnosis compared with people who do not have this condition. Although information collection on survival rates takes place at the 5-year mark, it is possible that many people will live for much longer than this.

The 5-year relative survival rate for prostate cancer at the local and regional stage is nearly 100 percent, while it is around 29 percent at the distant stage. However, it is vital to remember that survival rates are an estimate and that everyone is different.

Ascertainment Of Prostate Cancer

Using unique medical record numbers, we conducted data linkages to identify incident prostate cancer cases through the health plans’ cancer registries. Cancer case ascertainment is expected to be highly valid as reporting of cancers is mandated under state law and the KP Cancer Registries fulfill the reporting requirements for the State of California Cancer Registry and the National Cancer Institute Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Result program. We extracted data on date of diagnosis and stage at diagnosis. A total of 2,028 incident prostate cancer among the CMHS members were identified between study baseline and December 2007.

It has been established by cancer researchers that alcohol is a risk factor for many types of cancers. What may not be that well known is the fact that alcohol is not a risk factor, maybe even be a risk reducer for other types cancers. So how does alcohol specifically affect prostate cancer? This blog is going to take a look at the relation between alcohol consumption and prostate cancer.

Evidence Shows That Alcohol Consumption Is Associated With Cancers Of The:

  • Oral cavity and pharynx
  • Oesophagus

* low = < 12.5g/day, moderate = < 50g/day, heavy = > 50g/day

* in Australia one standard drink = 10 grams of alcohol, US = 14 grams, UK = 8 grams

The evidence linking daily alcohol intake and prostate cancer is accumulating, currently showing small but significant trends towards higher risks with increased consumption even demonstrating significant risk at lower daily intakes .

Top 10 Health Benefits Of Drinking Wine

The health benefits of drinking wine come from moderate consumption, defined by the American Heart Association as one to two four-ounce glasses a day. Be sure to drink in moderation so as not to turn these benefits into dangers. One glass of wine is recommended for women and one to two for men. One of the antioxidants found in wine is Resveratrol, which is the one to have the beneficial effect. It is found in the skin of grapes, and that is where the red wine comes in because it has more than white wine. This benefits are only applicable to moderate amounts. Here are the Top 10 from Health Fitness Revolution and author of the book ReSYNC Your Life Samir Becic:

  • Healthy heart The antioxidants found in a glass of win can help your heart in numerous ways to prevent heart diseases. They can increase your levels of high-density lipids and lower your bad cholesterol . They can protect your arteries from damage and prevent blood clots because the antioxidants enable your blood to flow easily. Wine may also increase the levels of omega-3 fatty acids, which are also known to have protective effects on heart and blood circulation.
  • Anti-aging effects Antioxidants soak up damaging free radicals that play a role in aging and age-related diseases. Red wine can help your skin look better and slow the effects of aging, such wrinkles, frown lines and crows-feet. Wine and grape derivatives can also help reduce the damaging effects of UV rays from overexposure to the sun.

How Does Alcohol Affect An Enlarged Prostate

From pints in your local pub, to the red wine in your spaghetti bolognaise, alcohol features in many a weekly routine. In a study completed by the Office for National Statistics in 2017, only 20% of adults said they were teetotal. Despite how often, and how many of us, turn to alcohol though, it can prove problematic. When it is drunk excessively it can increase the risk of developing heart disease, for example, as well as liver disease and strokes. Alcohol can also have a number of negative effects on symptoms of an enlarged prostate.

What Was Previously Thought

Protective foods for prostate cancer

As coffee contains several active components in the form of minerals and antioxidants, it is inaccurate to say that caffeine is the primary source that affects our metabolism.

In the past, only a few lifestyle factors, and daily habits were known to be consistently linked to prostate cancer, especially with the risk of aggressive disease.

Therefore, this study might be of great significance in order to understand the biology and growth of prostate cancer. It may also help with possible approaches that will lead to the prevention of invasive conventional treatments.

It follows that coffee drinkers have no reason to stop drinking their favorite beverage.

However, men with an enlarged prostate or BPH, and prostate infection or prostatitis, should limit coffee intake. Or much better, they should set a stop time for coffee or liquid intake within the day.

This is because the caffeine present in your favorite coffee beverage may stimulate the bladder and can make your symptoms worse and troublesome.

Although the caffeine in coffee may increase urinary urgency, urinary frequency, bladder irritation, and increased pain, it is not the cause of an enlarged prostate or prostatitis.

Coffee and caffeine are, in fact, good for your prostate health.

One Glass Of White Wine A Day Increases Risk Of Prostate Cancer

Drinking one glass of white wine a day raises the risk of prostate cancer by a quarter, a major review suggests.

But a daily red wine appears to slash the chance of developing the disease by an eighth.

Researchers at the Medical University of Vienna analyzed the boozing habits and medical records of 611,169 men taken from 17 previous studies.

They found one glass of wine a day made no difference to the prostate cancer risk when pooling all varieties of grape. But after separating them by color, white was linked to a 26 percent increased likelihood and red a 12 percent cut.

The Austrian university team believes the resveratrol in the skin of red grapes has cancer-fighting properties which may counteract the harm of alcohol.

There are around ten times as much of this in red as white.

Study leader Shahrokh Shariat said uncovering the molecular reason for the differences could potentially lead to prevention strategies.

Dr. Iain Frame, from Prostate Cancer UK, said: We would not recommend that anyone changes their drinking habits based on these results alone. Instead, its important all men maintain a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet and limited alcohol consumption.

A previous study found drinking beer may increase the risk of the most aggressive prostate cancers by 37 percent.

It is the most common cancer in men, with one in eight suffering from the condition during their lifetime.
