Boxed wines have skyrocketed during lockdown

Boxed wine typically holds 3 litres or more and has been the supermarket alcoholic go-to during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the U.S., Insider reported sales increased by 53% in the week of March 7, compared with like-for-like sales a year earlier. Across the border, the Liquor Control Board of Ontario, Canada, reported that boxed wines were up 77% in March 2020 versus 2019 .

In France, fuelled by the rise in virtual apéros during lockdown, Nielsen reported a 43% increase. And across the Channel, with the U.K. still under lockdown, The Mirror published an article recommending the best boxed wines you can get delivered to your door.

Boxed wine still makes sense post-pandemic…

Eric Lanxade is sales director for Caves et Vignobles du Gers in South-West France, which produces 400,000 hectolitres of bulk wine annually. He is certain that this is an upward trend. Quoted in Vitisphere, he said that business wont return to usual because of the need to permanently disinfect surfaces. He thinks this will cause a sea-change in peoples spontaneity towards others and sharing a glass of wine.

Why Is Wine Not Vegan

No, despite wine being essentially alcoholic grape juice, a lot of it isnt vegan at all . This is due to fining agents being added to speed up the clarification process. These additives can contain the following: Gelatine .

A Vegans Guide to Alcohol

Best For Red Wine Fanatics: Black Box Red Blend

Taste of Home

Crowd-pleasing picks aside, the red wine-lovers in our tasting group preferred this blend from Black Box. Pouring ourselves a small sample, we picked up on an assertive aroma. A wine with a bold bouquet certainly had to have an impactful taste, right?

Absolutely right! Taking a sip of Black Boxs red blend, we found it to be pleasantly powerful. Considering the spectrum of sweet to dry, this wine was right in the middle, making it a joy to sip on its own. While sampling, we all commented on how this wine was a bit more complex than the others we tried. It took us some time to parse out the individual flavors, but in the end, we picked up notes of plum, berries, vanilla and a little spice . The finish of this wine was long allowing us to savor those subtle flavors.

How Many Glasses Of Wine Will Get You Drunk

Bota Box Wine Review Heres What We Found

Unless you weigh 250 lbs or more, two glasses of wine in an hour makes you legally drunk. In order to achieve the same effect with beer, youd have to consume 3 to 4 of them in an hour. You only have so much time in an hour, and you really need to concentrate on your drinking to get that much beer down.

Practical Points About Bota Box

This wine is a blend 77% Zinfandel, mixed with Alicante Bouschet and Petite Sirah. All of the grapes have a Central Valley, California origin. Although it was aged in stainless steel tanks, real American and French oak staves lined the barrels to provide an oak flavor.

The Old Vine Zinfandel would be nicely paired with dishes having the primary flavors of garlic, rosemary, pork, chicken, beef, blue cheese, and medium and dark chocolate. Since its always a disappointment to open a $30+ wine and have to re-cork the unfinished bottle, this Bota Box is now on our preferred weekday wine list and cooking wine list.

Are There Any Good Vegan Box Wines

Devon’s boxed wine review: Bota box merlot

I’ve been trying to find some just for casual drinking, but all the ones I have checked on Barnivore are not vegan 🙁 Are there any good brands you know of, or other suggestions?

Hopefully you can find some near you.

Yalumba wines, including the box wines, are all vegan . They’re my go to for cooking, but they make a surprisingly good drinking wine. I’m not sure if they’re available outside of Australia, though.

Hahahah I love this. I know bevmo sells one. I doubt any boxed wine could be considered good

Not a wino so the only one I’m aware of is Peller Estates, but its Canadian and idk what country you’re from.

Two years ago Franzia was listed as vegan on Barnivore.

The bag-in-a-box version isn’t just kinder to your wallet, it’s also better for the environment.

But when it’s time to throw your first post-pandemic BBQ or backyard bash, consider picking up some boxed wine. At 3L , you can keep the wine flowing and your guests happy.

So whether you’re looking to lower your carbon footprint, sip on delicious wine without blowing your budget, or treat yourself to a glass of wine minus the hassle of it spoiling within a few days, boxed wines are well-worth checking out. These are our top boxed wines to pick up year-round:

Best Value: Franzia Dark Red Blend

Taste of Home

When you think of boxed wine, who doesnt think of Franzia? This classic brand got high marks for its value. A five-liter box costs less than $20 that comes out to $0.46 per glass! But outside of the amazing price, Franzias Dark Red Blend also impressed us with its rich bouquet.

Slightly dry, this red blend also gave us some earthier flavors accompanied by subtle notes of currants. During our blind sampling, a few tasters commented on how this wine stood out as being more festive than the others. Something about those dark fruit flavors and a touch of spice had us thinking fruitcake . Sipping this wine, we definitely envisioned ourselves enjoying a glass with friends during a party.

Delta Is Asking Airlines To Share Their No

Lanxade added that a bottle goes from one table to the next, from one hand to another and could be a vector of the virus but a big box of wine would solve that problem. He also added that it would be harder to defend higher carbon footprints in transporting glass bottles under new Covid-19 measures.

Black Box Wine is served during the 2018 Mammoth Lakes Film Festival in California.

The environmental credentials are proven

Boxed wines are often seen as down market but increasing environmental considerations mean that more and more people are turning to them. The New York Times reported on the lighter carbon footprint of transporting and packaging boxes compared to glass bottles.

In the U.S., for example, more than 90% of wine is produced on the west coast but the majority who consume it live on the east. Each 750 millilitre bottle generates around 5.2 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions as it travels from California to a New York restaurant or store. A three-litre box generates half the emissions .

Additionally, a box preserves wine for about four weeks compared with only a day or two for a bottle. The typical drawback cited by wine aficionados is that the quality is often inferior in boxes. But that looks to be changing…

Vegan Mofo #1: Vegan Wines

As a vegan you become accustomed to checking the labels of everything you eat, drink, and wear and are always asking if something is vegan before letting it touch your lips. However one of the most difficult things to determine whether or not it is vegan is wine. You might ask what makes it not vegan? Well, some wines are clarified after fermentation and some of the ingredients used include:

edible gelatins isinglass casein and potassium caseinate animal albumin

As we all know wines dont usually have an ingredients list on the bottle as other products so we cant just go to the market and pick up a bottle without doing a little research. A great site to find out which wines are vegan is here you can find a list of wines, beers and liquors and details as to if they are vegan friendly, mostly vegan friendly or not vegan friendly. If you click the name it brings you further so you can find out if ones is mostly vegan friendly which specific wines are.

Mediterranean Tomato & Feta Dip

BOTA BOX PG 3L

The past month has been a whirlwind. First up, cookbook launch! I never thought the day would come. Then, celebratory girls night, my grandmas birthday in Oklahoma, Alis bachelorette party, Memorial Day, Jordans baby shower, Alis amazing wedding, and another girls night .

The days are long, and Im planning more trips for this year and next. Catching up and celebrating with friends and family has been so restorative. After all those celebrations, Im simultaneously eager for another excuse to go dancing and looking forward to more lazy nights in with Cookie. Post-cookbook Kate is ready to take on the world.

Believe it or not, for years after I started sharing recipes on this blog, I was still nervous about cooking for people in real life. I used to get nervous butterflies before anyone took a first bite. Maybe you know the feeling.

Now that the book is finally finished, Im so desperate to make up for lost time that Im practically bribing friends to come over so I can cook for them. I have a whole cookbooks worth of obsessively-tested, new favorites to make for them.

For this edition of girls night, though, I made a new recipe. Its a combination of two recipes from ages agothis baked Mediterranean feta dip and this tomato basil salad, which was hardly a recipe but look at Cookie.

Company email re: La Merika Wines:”The short answer is no we do not make the statement that our wines are vegan or vegetarian friendly. Since there may be slight differences/variations from vintage to vintage our winemakers need to have access to tools to help make the wines as consistent as possible. Some of these tools can make the wine non-vegetarian or non-vegan. In order to maintain as much flexibility as possible, we do not make claims that our wines are Vegan or Vegetarian friendly.”

Company email :”Unfortunately we cannot make the statement that any of the wines we produce is vegan or vegetarian-friendly. Each vintage is different and our winemakers need to use the tools necessary to make our wines as consistent as possible. We do import some wines as well, which would be another reason we could not guarantee a vegan or vegetarian status.”
