Food?: From house-cured salumi and slow braised meats to vegetables from their garden and Grandma Dees handmade ravioli, Chef Joshua and the entire culinary team collaborate on a unique menu that embodies the season and pairs perfectly with the wines.
The tasting was more expensive than other vineyards at $45 per person, but it included cheese, bread and olive oil! I highly recommend venturing into their gorgeous Venetian caves the tour with barrel tasting is $75. Check out that chandelier! The tasting room is beautiful decked out with venetian paintings, tiling, marble pillars and expensive wines.

Napa Valley Vs Sonoma Valley
The second biggest confusion is Napa Valley vs. Sonoma Valley. These are to different wine regions! While they are near each other, a large mountain range runs between them which makes it a very bad idea to try to go wine tasting in both Sonoma Valley and Napa Valley on the same day
Also, Sonoma Valley has the town of Sonoma just like Napa Valley has the town of Napa, so that confuses people a LOT.
Sonoma Valley also has a really different vibe, landscape and wine specialties compared to Napa Valley. I chat more about that in this post.

How Far In Advance To Book Tours And Tastings
We will be in Napa in September. We’re starting to work on our list of wineries we’d like to try to go to. For the ones that require reservations for tours or tastings how far in advance will we need to call? Thanks.
That depends. Some reservations-required wineries have lots of capacity, so booking far ahead isn’t usually required. For the smaller wineries with limited capacity – or that may be closed on weekends – you’ll want to call ahead and ask about availability on your chosen dates.
Just anecdotally, this week – 4th of July holiday – many of the tours & tasting slots had been booked up well in advance, and this caught many visitors by surprise. Ditto the restaurants.
Not sure if this is a trend yet, or this holiday week is unusually busy due to the 4th falling on a Wednesday and many are choosing to stay the week, or, it’s just a blip.
Something to keep an eye on and to be aware of re: your planning.
Adding my 2 cents to NanciInNapa’s good points – – certain wineries that have “cult” status, have gone virally popular, or drastically limit daily visitors and “seating” times can get booked weeks in advance. In these cases a combination of high-quality experience/great wine/reputation + psychology of “hard to get” comes into play and makes them seem more compelling, like a reservation at the French Laundry or a Super Bowl ticket.
Schramsberg’s Cave Tour & Tasting
Schramsberg winery is notorious for fantastic wines and tours so it is perfect stop if you love sparkling wines and cave tours. Their caves are over 125 years and you will feel like you’ve been transported to the Champagne region in France. This tour is one of the longest tours that I know at an hour and a half, so make sure to prepare.
You will taste 5 different sparkling and still wines with specifically chosen cheeses so you can experience the perfect pairing. All visitors must be 21 years or older seating is limited to 12 people.

Napa Valley Wine Trolley
Another tour you might enjoy is the Napa Valley Wine Trolley. The main difference between this and the Napa Valley Wine Trolley and Castle tour is that this tour does not have a visit to the castle. On the plus side, you get to visit four wineries instead of three. So, if you are looking to spend more time tasting wine, instead of touring a castle, this would be your best bet.
You will cruise through Napa Valley in a San Francisco replica open air Cable Car . The trolley will pick you up at Oxbow Market, in downtown Napa, and take you through the valley. Your professional guide will give you information about the wineries and the region during each step of the tour. It also includes a catered picnic lunch by award winning chef Michael Chiarello.
This is one of the Napa Valley wine tasting tours that will conclude back at the Oxbow Market after your 6-hour journey. You must be 21 or older for this tour. Wine tasting fees and gratuities are not included in the price of the tour.

Of course, this list only scratches the surface. Napa has dozens of other amazing wineries worth noting, such as Beaulieu, Cakebread, Ehlers, Far Niente, Robert Mondavi, Pine Ridge, Shafer, Darioush and Silver Oak, to name a few.
You Need To Plan Before You Visit
Things are different now. In some cases, they are very very different. The average wine tasting consists of five 1 oz sips of the winery’s standard offerings. At smaller wineries, this could mean you are getting the good stuff. At the larger wineries, you are likely getting a tier 2 or tier 3 wine for this price. The price for your tasting depends on where the winery happens to be located. Prices in Napa being the highest and the Sierra wineries generally charging the least.
The days of just dropping in for a tasting are also fading away. Wineries now must control the flow of guests to their tasting counters. That means you must plan ahead and book a tasting. This is can be good and bad. You will be forced to do some planning and research. That will give you a chance to find the best California wine tasting discounts online.

Best Tasting Porch: Kieu Hoang Winery
In the evening, fog and breezes off nearby San Pablo Bay provide natural cooling in the Carneros AVA. During the day, Kieu Hoang winerys perfectly situated porch looks out over sun-soaked vineyards located in the southernmost grape-growing region in Napa Valley.
Kieu Hoang Winery is an iconic Napa Valley winery founded in 2014 on land purchased from the famous Mondavi wine family. The winerys owner, Kieu Hoang, a scientist originally from Vietnam, has partnered with winemaker Charles Hendricks to produce several standout varietals.
The winery is particularly known for its Platinum Label products made with grapes grown 2000 feet above sea level and in the direct pathway of cool breezes from San Pablo Bay, ideal growing conditions for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes.

Best Snob Appeal: Opus One
This Napa Valley winery began as a joint venture between Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe Rothschild. The two wine behemoths teamed up to create a magnificent winery focused on producing a single Bordeaux blend with Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.
In 2004, Constellation Brands acquired Robert Mondavi winery and entered into a management agreement with Baron Rothschild. Opus One Winery delivers a luxurious, though somewhat formal wine experience.
The estate is impressive, especially when driving down the to the winery entrance. Looking out across Opus Ones vineyards from the upstairs terrace, you can become absorbed in a wonderful glass of wine. It doesnt get more luxurious than this!
Opus One produces only one wine, a Bordeaux-style Cabernet Sauvignon blend, so be prepared for tasting one lovely red wine in a positively pretentious setting.

How To Spend Less And Do More In Napa Valley
Napa Valley. Known for world-renowned wineries, posh hotels and Michelin-starred restaurants, no other destination in America embodies aspirational wine travel like this sliver of northern California. One could drop thousands of dollars on an over-the top vacation here, but those on a budget can also sample its fruits. At its heart, Napa remains an agricultural community and nature preserve.

How Should I Get Around
There are a few different ways to get around the Napa Valley.
Perhaps the most commonand the easiestis by car. If youre planning to drive yourself, have a designated driver and reserve a rental cars are available from all area airports, as well as from most of the major valley hotels. Rideshares serve the region, as well even at peak times, customers rarely wait more than 5 or 10 minutes for an Uber or Lyft.
