Don’t Be Afraid To Dig Around

Cullen said that he’s never afraid to dig around in the wine section of the warehouse.

“People think you’re really weird when you’re doing that, but it’s totally worth it,” he said.

That’s because different vintages tend to be thrown in the bins together.

“Don’t just grab the first bottle,” Reyes said. She said that while vintage might not matter as much for lower-end wines, for high-ticket bottles it’s far more crucial.

Cullen described finding separate vintages at the same price.

“If there are a bunch of ’15s on top, you might dig down and find a ’14,” he said. “You might even find a ’13 vintage, stuck in there. It doesn’t hurt to look.”

Cullen also recommended checking beneath the wooden racks, where you might also find a forgotten bottle of an otherwise sold-out wine.

Terra Doro Zinfandel 2017

A cornucopia of aromas includes brown mustard, canned peach, and yogurt, according to our panelists. Although not a traditional Zinfandel, panelists agreed its an interesting take on the style. This does not taste like a Zinfandel, one taster said, noting its not-too-oaky, not-too-smoky flavors and tannins. Another taster said it would pair great with a big, bloody burger, with a hunk of cheddar. Average U.S. retail price: $17.

Kirkland Signature Premier Cru Chablis

11 Things You Probably Don

13.5% alcohol $19.99

Owen: Sourced from two different vineyards in Van Ligneau and Vaugiraut, France, this outstanding 2018 Chablis is crafted by Odile Van Der Moere. Light, flinty tones mingle with ripe pear and lemon zest on the nose. The palate is plush and soft with a wonderful, long, crescendo finish. This has good cellaring potential. Drink 2020-2028. Verdict: Highly recommended.

Tan: The Chablis was the best Costco wine I had last year. This year, its neck and neck with another red for best in class. Last December, this Chablis and the Champagne were the only Costco-label wines we both gave a highly recommended grade that were still available after the holidays. I surmise its because of the $19.99 price, which is on the high end for Costco wine. Bargain hunters seek Kirkland wines under $7. But even at 20 bucks, this is a better value than those wines under 10 bucks. Like last year, I blind-tasted this bottle with other Chablis in the $50 range again, and this was just as good as the bottles in the higher price range. Like Owen said, that lingering finish is just outstanding. Verdict: Highly recommended.

How Many Cases Of Wine In A Barrel

There are about 25 cases of wine in one barrel. The standard wine barrel is 60 gallons and can fill 300 standard 750 ml bottles. That’s equivalent to a total of 1,500 glasses of wine.

Bottle sizes may be different for different varietals. If a winery uses another bottle size, this will change the cases produced. A pinot noir is unlikely to be in a large bottle while a champagne might be. Plan for these numbers to change based on the wine you’re looking for.

Larger bottles are often used for small-batch vintages and for the highest-end wines. Magnum bottles are 1.5 liters, so a barrel would only produce 12-and-a-half cases of wine. Jeroboam and Rehoboam bottles are so large that a barrel would only produce 5 to 6 cases.

They Also Sometimes Stock Collector’s Items

Costco Wine Review – Kirkland Signature 2017 Malbec from Mendoza Argentina – Broquel by Sergio Case

While Costco sells a ton of bottles under $20 , don’t be surprised to find rare collector’s bottles. According to Wine Spectator, one shopper found three bottles of 2007 Screaming Eagle at a Costco in Redwood City, California. In case you haven’t heard of this Napa Valley cult wine, they were being sold for $1,500 a bottle.

How Much Does A Case Of Wine Weigh

The average case of wine weighs between 30 and 40 lbs or 14.25 to 19 kg. Since there are 12 bottles of wine in a case, we can estimate the total weight based off of a single bottle’s weight. The standard 750 ml bottle of wine weighs an average of 2.65 pounds . This will vary depending on the size and thickness of the bottle.

You should also consider the extra weight added by the packaging itself. Some wholesalers offer free shipping if you order a certain amount. Still, if you order in smaller quantities you’ll find that the shipping cost varies based on weight. Err on the side of caution and assume the case weighs a bit more than the sum of the bottles. This will ensure you don’t mistakenly order more than you can afford.

The Best Wines At Costco Right Now Ranked

Costco is more than a bargain-buying warehouse. Its an international phenomenon. So loyal are its fans, the conglomerate has inspired accounts and blogs unaffiliated with its business yet devoted to sharing its wares and wines.

Costcos wine selection includes its own Kirkland brand, as well as bottles from other producers. Wine is sourced from hundreds and hundreds of wineries around the world, Annette Alvarez Peters, assistant general manager of wine at Costco, tells VinePair in an email. This includes most of the major wine growing regions, from California to Washington to France.

Distribution varies by region, state, and even store. In addition, Peters says, since we have a treasure hunt mentality, we are constantly rotating our items in and out of our system. So, stock can be difficult to pin down, but shoppers can trust certain guidelines. Kirkland Signature wines seems to be pretty widely distributed, and are almost always a very good buy and a good representation of region or varietal, Andrew Cullen, founder of CostcoWineBlog.com, tells VinePair in a phone interview. But, he warns, Like anything else at Costco it moves fast.

Costco could not share pricing, so average U.S. retail prices below are sourced via Wine-Searcher. However, it is worth noting that Costco prices are often discounted, so its possible a $20 wine on this list could be found between $10 to $15.

Kirkland Signature California Cabernet Sauvignon

Costco, BevMo, Safeway or Trader Joe

13% alcohol $7.99 for 1.5-liter bottle

Owen: Its unknown where this wine came from. The sweetened tones on the nose are downright offensive. The palate is flat and saccharine-driven with very little in terms of actual fruit flavors. This is really disappointing stuff even at this price. I wouldnt even sell this at a truck stop. Verdict: Not recommended.

Tan: The source is unknown because who would cop to blending this crap. It tastes like its been adulterated. You could float an orange slice on top and convince all your house guests that this is sangria, its so sweet. Verdict: Not recommended.

Chteau De Beaucastel Chteauneuf

Pouring deep garnet, almost brown, this southern Rhône red blend begins with black pepper on the nose and has a gentle acidity on the palate. This is interesting and different, one panelist said, admiring its lightly savory flavor. Its a great introduction to the Rhône region, but is notably pricier than other Costco selections. If youre balling out for Thanksgiving and you can find this for $65, it is worth it, one panelist said. Average U.S. retail price: $77.

Secrets To Scoring Wine Deals At Costco

When buying wine at Costco, youll want to get the most bang for your buckby Andrew Cullen

Theres nothing quite like the Costco Hunt the search for products that are abundantly in stock one day and completely gone the next. Once these products disappear, they become almost legendary, discussed among shoppers with a mystique about having once existed. Thats part of the reason people stand in front of Costco stores waiting for them to open on a daily basis.

I don’t live near a Costco but have been fortunate enough on some vacations to go with my brother-in-law and bought a big stock. I will be in an area with a Costco this weekend and was hoping to use the new found knowledge about them letting you into the store if you only want to buy wine. I called the one I will be near and they said that was not correct. Is there a way to clarify this?

Hi and thanks for the note. I just called a store near me in Atlanta and they had the same response that you got, that it is not permitted. It’s possible there was a policy change on this otherwise it may be that it goes location by location. My info was gathered from a few different unofficial sources. Im afraid this may be something that has to be tested as it goes.

Make Friends With The Club’s Wine Advisor

Certain Costco stores employ a resident wine advisor. According to Reyes, it’s a good idea to consult this employee.

“They have no vested interest in promoting a certain wine,” she said. “Their goal is just to increase the wine sales. They’re good resources. They have all the insider info without an ulterior motive.”

Reyes said that a Costco wine advisor might be able to tip you off when “something special” is coming.

But she also said to keep in mind that promoters working with wine distributors can also be found in the section of the store. That’s a job that Reyes herself used to have.

“I was very honest with the members,” she said. “I was sometimes promoting wine that I wasn’t supposed to be promoting.”

These promoters can be knowledgeable about the warehouse’s wine selection, but they also have an incentive to steer you toward the products they’re paid to hawk.
