Blanning said, One other point to bear in mind is that a dry wine may not always be the best choice for a low-calorie option.

A sweeter wine with low alcohol could be lower in calories than a high-alcohol dry white, because the residual sugar is a less-concentrated source of carbohydrate than alcohol, at four calories per gram.

    White Wine Spritzer Flavor Ideas

    • Fresh and frozen fruit: This is the most popular way to add flavor and beauty to a spritzer. Consider using strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, peaches, watermelon, cantaloupe, or blackberries. In summer months, I love using frozen peaches, watermelon, or cantaloupe to keep the drink cold and add flavor. Frozen berries work, but they will release juice as they defrost and change the color of the drink.
    • Citrus: Use a large peeler to remove strips of lemon, lime, or orange to add to the spritzer. You can squeeze in some juice as well.
    • Flavored seltzer: Consider using a flavored seltzer to add another flavor dimension. Just note that this will cover the taste of the wine a bit more.
    • Fresh herbs: Add fresh sprigs of rosemary or thyme. Additionally, you can add some fresh basil, mint, or cilantro.
    • Bitters: Bitters come in all different flavors and a small splash can add tons of flavor to a traditional white wine spritzer.

How Does This Translate Into Calories

The basic formula used to calculate the calories in wine is as follows:

% of Alcohol X Ounces X 1.6 = Calorie Content where 1 ounce is equal to 28.3 grams in weight or 29 ml.

So a six-ounce glass of wine that has an ABV of 15% has about 144 calories compared to a six-ounce glass of wine that has an ABV of 12%, which has about 115 calories. As this has nothing to do with whether the wine is white or red, please dont make calorie assumptions based on the colour of your wine. Instead, you should pay attention to the alcohol content and you can cut out some calories by choosing a wine with less alcohol.

How Many Calories Does A Glass Of Wine Contain

There is a simple answer. A glass of wine contains approximately 125 calories. That is the same amount of calories as two apples, a glass of milk or a can of tuna. However, this varies a little depending on the type of wine. It all depends on the residual sugar content. To understand this, we need to look at how the wine is made. We have to think about alcoholic fermentation, the process where yeasts feed on carbohydrates from the grapes and convert this fructose and glucose into alcohol. The sugars that dont finish fermenting, the residual sugars, are the carbohydrates that remain in the wine. Therefore, the drier the wine, the less carbohydrates it will have. On the other hand, sweet wines will contain a higher amount of sugar and, therefore, more calories . Then distilled beverages like whisky, vodka and rum, dont contain any carbohydrates when enjoyed neat.

Be aware however of mocktails etc where the sugar level is high. Remember for some to drinks it is only the fact that the alcohol that is not there decreases the calories overall. Labelling And The Politics Of Calories In Wine

There has been lots of debate about calorie labelling on alcoholic drinks, from discussion around whether it should be mandatory or voluntary to differing opinions on how best to do it.

The UKs Royal Society for Public Health has previously accused the alcoholic drinks industry of hiding on the issue of nutrition labelling.

A number of wineries and retailers have supported moves to provide more information, although this is sometimes done online rather than directly on labels.

EU wine trade body, the CEEV, published a calorie labelling plan in 2018.

The issue returned to the fore in the UK in April following media reports that pubs and bars might have to print calorie information on menus or beer taps although has since been dropped.

How Many Calories In White Wine

How many carbs in a glass of wine

White wine has an average of 24 calories per ounce. This number is only slightly lower than that of red wine. This is because there is such a broad spectrum of white wines. A wine like a riesling will come in below average but another white like a sweet dessert wine will be far above it. It’s important to check both the ABV and sugar content in a white wine to understand where it falls on the spectrum. Any added sugar will add up quickly.

White wine is also perfect for making slushies. So grab that low-calorie white, freeze the wine, and get ready for a delicious treat that doesn’t break your diet.

    Weight Loss And Alcohol Consumption

Limiting alcohol consumption has long been linked to weight loss.

For the calorie counters out there, reducing empty calories from alcohol means you have more calories available for healthy foods and beverages. That can be reason enough not to drink, but there are other health benefits to limiting your alcohol consumption as well.

Alcohol consumption can leave you feeling sluggish and bloated, potentially causing you to skip workouts. Too much wine can also lead to overeating due to lowered inhibitions. These choices to skip workouts and overindulge can lead to weight gain.

Now that you have an idea of wine calorie counts, you may be wondering about your favorite brand. The formula for calculating calories in wine is:

    alcohol by volume x ounces x 1.8

Keep this formula handy, as its rare to see any nutrition facts on a wine label.

Calories In 4 Oz White Wine

A 4 oz glass of white wine contains an average of 96 calories. If youâre looking to limit your caloric intake, but still want to enjoy a taste white wine varietal, you can stick with a smaller 4 oz pour. You might find that this pour is much smaller than you expect, so youâll probably need to measure as you pour if you really want to keep your calories under 100.

Is Prosecco Better For You Than Wine

So seeing as prosecco contains antioxidants good for your blood flow, its been proven as healthy for your heart as red wine , helping to strengthen blood vessels and prevent blood clots. And, although it might seen counter-intuitive, drinking one to three glasses of prosecco a week could be good for your memory.

How Do I Know Which Prosecco Is Low

    Wine Calories

If you want a really dry, low-cal prosecco, then look out for the label brut.

Brut means dry and unsweetened in French, so you can enjoy a nice refreshing glass knowing it wont impact your calorie, sugar, or carb intake much.

Prosecco Brut is low in residual sugar, meaning fewer carbs and ultimately fewer calories, with between 60 and 80 calories per glass.

Extra dry prosecco suggests that its drier than brut prosecco, but it actually has a higher sugar content. If youre watching your calorie intake, brut is a better option than anything labelled extra dry.

Similarly, anything labelled Prosecco Dry may also be misleading. Dry prosecco also has a high sugar content and a sweeter taste, resulting in a higher calorie and carb content.

Dry prosecco is often served with cakes and pastries, as the sweet tastes combine well together on your palate.

The sweetest version of prosecco is Demi-sec, which has around 8 teaspoons of sugar per bottle.

Demi-sec prosecco can contain around 120 calories per glass, so you might want to avoid this type of prosecco if youre conscious of calories.

The amount of alcohol in wine can vary. But wines typical strength means drinking a bottle in one session would usually be classed as binge drinking .1

Research shows that binge drinking over a three-to-six-hour period increases your short-term risk of accidents and injuries by two to five times.2

Can I Make These In Advance

If you are serving these for a party or want to make a larger batch, it is best to make it right before serving so that the club soda stays bubbly and the ice doesn’t water down the drink. For a pitcher or spritzers, add any fruit or extras you will be using to the pitcher. Then add the ice, white wine, and club soda right before serving.

    • fruit wines can also come in lower alcohol versions
    • sparkling wines – check for RS levels though!

Watch out for Moscato d’Asti – it’s low in alcohol but jacked with sugar. The sugar raises the calories right back up there. Enter the residual sugar and alcohol level of a Moscato d’Asti into the calculators on this page and you’ll see what I mean.

    What The?

There is no such thing as a sweetness scale for wine like there is a heat scale for hot peppers .

    • to retail outlets
    • to websites and other literature.

That’s one reason why some wines can fall into more than one style… eg. dry and semi-dry.

It’s also why the consumer is left scratching their head – especially if they’re trying to add up the calories in wine.

To me, a dry wine should have less than 2g/l residual sugar. With all of the fermentable sugars depleted. Isn’t that what “fermented dry” should mean?

What about other sugars that are unfermentable… like Pentose? They’re found only in very small quantities in wine, and typically add less than 1g/l .
