When you talk about American winemakers on the world stage, the very first winemaker to be mentioned would probably be Miljenko Grgich. Already thrust into the limelight when he crafted the sensational 1969 Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon, he was then tasked with making a Chardonnay to compete against the best of Burgundy for the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Many believed that Chardonnay in particular would be a varietal where Americans would be laughed off the stage. But as you all know the story by now, Mike Grgichs 1973 Chateau Montelena was chosen as the best white wine in the world, sending shockwaves throughout the wine community and cementing the U.S. winemakers legacy amongst the worlds best.

On the heels of his big victory, he left Chateau Montelena just a year later in 1977 to start his own winery with partner Austin Hills. Together, they settled on a magnificent plot of land in the Rutherford AVA in the heart of Napa Valley, and named it Grgich Hills Estate.

Since then, the Grgich Hills team has systematically ticked off every great accolade in the industry. In 2017, his Estate Grown Chard earned its highest ever rating from Robert Parkers Wine Advocate who highlighted the winesenergy, racy backbone and spice laced finish.

Our StoryMiljenko Mike Grgich first gained international recognition at the celebrated Paris Tasting of 1976. Then, in a now-historic blind tasting, a panel of eminent French judges swirled, sniffed, and sipped an array of the fabled white Burgundies of France and a small sampling of upstart Chardonnays from the Napa Valley. When their scores were tallied, the French judges were shocked: they had chosen the 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay, crafted by Mike Grgich, as the finest white wine in the world. Mon Dieu! The results stunned the international wine establishment and immediately earned Mike a reputation as one of the greatest winemakers in the world.

Grgich Hills Estate is a historic fixture in Napa Valley, founded by Miljenko “Mike” Grgich in the Rutherford AVA in 1977. The winery produces an array of wines from five estate vineyards located throughout the famous valley, and has received international acclaim for its elegant and balanced wines.

Mike Grgich became world famous for crafting the 1973 vintage of Chateau Montelena Chardonnay that ranked top at the famous Judgment of Paris tasting in 1976, beating out some of Burgundy’s most famous white wines. As a result, Grgich Hills Estate’s Chardonnay is one of the more popular wines in the range, sourced from cooler vineyards in American Canyon and Carneros. With no malolactic fermentation, this is a fresher style of Chardonnay with bright acidity. Another popular white wine is the Fumé Blanc, a Sauvignon Blanc aged in large French oak casks.

Miljenko Mike Grgich has been called The King of Chardonnay since the winery began in 1977, and you can taste why in this classically-styled wine. We did not allow the Chardonnay to undergo malolactic fermentation, preserving its natural acidity. The wine displays crisp Fuji apple, honeydew melon and a hint of cashew nut aromas and avors. Enjoy with fresh seafood, roasted chicken, grilled pork, and creamy cheeses.
