Texans Can Now Legally Buy Alcohol Before Noon On Sundays

WACO, Texas – A change in state law now allows Texas to legally buy beer and wine at stores starting at 10 a.m. on Sundays.

The 87th Texas Legislature passed House Bill 1518 in the spring and it went into effect on Wednesday, Sept. 1. The law amends the Alcoholic Beverage Code which previously required grocery stores and convenience stores wait until noon to sell beer and wine.

During weekdays stores can sell beer and wine from 7 a.m. until midnight Monday through Friday and from 7 a.m. Saturday until 1 a.m. Sunday.

The law only applies to beer and wine. Liquor is still not allowed to be sold on Sundays and liquor stores are to be remained closed on Sundays. Liquor sales are also prohibited on Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Years Day and before 10 a.m. or after 9 p.m. on any other day.

The bill does provide an exception for hotel bars to sell alcohol to registered guests at any time of day.

The Texas alcohol bans, often referred to as Blue Laws, date back to 1935 when lawmakers passed the Texas Liquor Control Act in response to the repeal of Prohibition.

This year Gov. Greg Abbott also signed a bipartisan bill making alcohol to-go sales legal in the state. The state had temporarily allowed the practice during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. R

Is Alcohol Cheaper At Trader Joes

Trader Joes does have lower prices on beer and wine, and liquor where available compared to most alcoholic beverage stores in the same areas. And their private label alcohol is significantly cheaper.

A bottle of that might be $20 elsewhere can typically be found at Trader Joes for $15. So, you might be wondering why they are cheap.

So how cheap? Its very cheap when you consider that a bottle of one of its most popular wines, Charles Shaw, goes for less than $3! It practically goes for a song. Its available as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Chardonnay, in red and white varieties.

Its so popular, more than a billion bottles have been sold.

Its being made for TJ, under a contract, by Bronco Wine. Bronco Wine employs a variety of strategies to keep its overhead very low. This is why TJ gets to sell the wine at such rates. What of Vodka? Vodka at Costco goes for $12.99, while Gin at TJ sells for $11.99.

But I used to regularly buy my tequila, bourbon, and vodka at TJs when I lived in California.

And, for example, I used to buy Puerto Vallarta Tequila Blanco in a 750ml bottle for under 15 bucks. These days that same bottle sells elsewhere for $28.

These days, they mostly sell their private label tequila, but the prices will almost always be better on all alcohol at TJs.

Can you buy these goodies at any Trader Joes store, no matter where you live?

Many people get caught up in demanding work schedules. As a result, the only time they have to visit stores to buy their favorite drinks and groceries is late at night or early in the morning. Thus, knowing Kroger liquor store hours in different states is helpful.

What States Allow Grocery Stores To Sell Liquor

WALGREENS DEAL/ UPDATE ON FREE BEER AT KROGER/NEW MM BEER TRANSACTION /LOTS OF FETCH, IBOTTA & KCB

After the end of prohibition in 1933, states were allowed to regulate alcohol sales themselves. But it resulted in a wide variety of laws from state to state. So many have wondered what states allow grocery stores to sell liquor?

I decided to investigate and heres what I learned:

The states listed below allow sales of liquor in grocery stores:

  • Arizona
  • Wyoming

But theres a lot more to know than that!

Many states allow you to buy beer in grocery stores. But some only allow you to buy wine. Some states will allow you to buy liquor on Sundays, but even some of those dont let you buy it before noon.

For example, in Nebraska, you cannot purchase liquor until noon. But in Florida, there are no time restrictions on liquor sales, but you can only purchase liquor from liquor stores.

And other states limit the liquor licenses chain stores have so not all locations may actually sell liquor. It all gets very confusing and frustrating.

But have no fear! Weve done the leg work to make sure you are well informed about each states alcohol laws.

Just keep reading!

** Louisiana liquor sales are allowed in grocery stores. But, individual cities, towns, and villages may disallow it. Shreveport does not allow hard liquor sales in grocery and other non-liquor store outlets. Bossier city does allow hard liquor sales in grocery stores. Rural Caddo Parish allows it as well.

Sunday Wine Sales Go Into Effect At Tn Grocery Stores

MEMPHIS, TN – For the first time, Sunday wine sales are allowed at grocery stores across the state.

There was no rush down the aisles for Sunday wine at the Poplar Plaza Kroger store.

However, Sunday shoppers who were previously turned away are now pleased to learn about the new Tennessee law.

Yea it was disappointing when they told me I cant get it on Sunday, when youre looking forward to a nice glass of wine with your dinner, said Ekin Huddleston, shopper.

The law allows grocery stores to sell wine on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. and on certain holidays.

Many shoppers said the new law is accommodating.

We get up very early on Sunday to beat the crowds, so its extremely convenient to be able to stop and pick up a bottle of wine, said Darletta Newson, shopper.

Because Sunday wine sales in grocery stores are just getting started, a lot of liquor store owners feel it is too soon to gauge the competition.

However, Kimbrough Wine & Spirits said that their wine sales on Sunday have been successful.

We werent sure about it but after we opened on Sunday and started selling, Sunday has been one of our biggest days, said Doug Ketchum, owner.

Liquor stores got a head start after a law passed last year allowing them to sell wine on Sundays, while grocery stores could not.

At Kimbrough, they have become crafty in order to keep customers coming through the door.

How Is Alcohol Regulated By The Law

Prohibition ended in 1933 with the ratification of the 21st amendment.

Since that time, alcohol has been regulated by a combination of federal, state, and local laws. These laws regulate the manufacturing and the sale of alcohol, as well as the drinking age.

The 21st amendment is the primary federal law governing alcohol policies. It also gives individual states control over whether to allow the sale of alcohol in the state at all.

It also regulates importing, distribution and possession of alcohol within the state. Some states offer local governments control over alcohol policy development and enforcement. Other states control alcohol policy at the state government level.

Unfortunately, the confusing state of affairs as it relates to alcohol policy is the drawback of giving states and local governments control over alcohol policy.

However, even with the flexibility of some laws at the state level, Congress maintains the power over certain alcohol policies, such as the minimum legal drinking age.
