About Cordial Cellar + Lounge
Stacey and Simon Tingstrom opened Cordial Bottle Shop in 2016, giving an old-school San Leandro liquor store a new life by stocking an encyclopedic stock of craft spirits, wines and beers, while maintaining the corner store spirit . Stacey, former fashion designer, wasnt sure what type of business to open when she spied the shop for sale close to her San Leandro home, but Cordial Bottle Shop has quickly became a neighborhood destination for properly stocking the home bar, as well as discovering the new with its popular Friday night tasting program.
Cordial Cellar + Lounge in the basement level of the Castro Valley Marketplace will offer premium spirits, extensive wine selection and some light bites so that all that alcohol doesnt go to your head.
Goutorbe Bouillot Reflets De Rivire Brut
Champagne, France, $54
This seductive wine comes from vineyards along the Marne River and its tributaries, thus the name. The blend is 60 percent pinot meunier, with the rest equal parts chardonnay and pinot noir. I could happily sit and contemplate this wine, perhaps with some light snacks or seafood. Alcohol by volume: 12 percent.

Tuscany, Italy, $23
This is an old-style traditional Chianti, including the white grapes Trebbiano Gentile and Malvasia del Chianti, as well as red grapes Canaiolo and Sangiovese. Yet the wine seems modern in style, with intense fruit and depth. Its flavors unfold over several hours, rewarding advance planning and a decanter. Alcohol by volume: 14 percent.

This wine looks for all intents and purposes to be a rosé, but it technically isnt. Pinot gris, or pinot grigio in Italy, is a dark-skinned white grape, and when the juice is left on the skins for a time after pressing, some of that color remains in the wine. Most pinot grigio that we know as the ubiquitous crisp, refreshing white wine is made from juice separated from the skins at pressing. The Attems Ramato has a glorious copper-orange color resulting from 24 hours of skin contact with the must , an effusive aroma, and a tannic grip that gives the wine heft. ABV: 12.5 percent.

- Does not carry typical brands, but an interesting selection of liquor that might convince you to buy local or just a different brand. Also has a fridge with a small selection of cold beer, cider, and mead . Decorative wine selection but higher price points than I typically partake in.

Charles Heidsieck Brut Rserve

Beautifully ripe and toasty, this lovely champagne seems to speak of sunnier harvests than this northerly wine region is typically known for. It shows impressive depth and length as well, and provides some freshness dating on the label. The bottle I tasted was cellared in 2011 and disgorged in 2018 that extended aging in the houses chalk cellars indicates quality, while the fairly recent disgorgement gives confidence that the wine hasnt been kicking around for years in a warehouse or store. ABV: 12 percent.

Heres a last-chance wine: LErmitage 2012 nearly sold out after Wine Spectator magazine ranked it No. 5 on its top 100 wines of the year list last month. This is the tête de cuvée from Roederer Estate, the California outpost of the Louis Roederer champagne house. The company farms its vineyards biodynamically, and the care shows in this sophisticated, stylish bubbly. The new vintage will be reaching stores soon, but you should be able to find some of the 2012. The Roederer Estate Brut is also consistently good, at a much lower price. ABV: 12.5 percent.

Pampelonne Sparkling Wine Cocktails

Pampelonne comes in a variety of fun flavors inspired by wine cocktails popular in European cafes and bistros. I like the Blood Orange Spritz, and the Negroni Sbagliato flavor has a nice bitter orange note that mimics a negroni. A Harvest Pear Palmetto has been introduced for fall, with pear and Meyer lemon flavors. These are nice for patio lunches when you dont have time for a nap afterward, or for a tasty quaff before moving on to more serious wines with dinner. ABV: 6 percent.
