Heading into its 17th year, the festival continues to address concerns about compensation for talent. This year, all chefs will receive a $500-$1,000 per-event stipend to purchase food and supplies, Maute Smith said. Restaurants hosting signature dinners will receive $95 per-attendee, and the festival will provide those hosting lunches and brunches with $55 for each guest that purchases a ticket.

This, organizers contend, will help place money back into the community by affording Charleston area chefs the flexibility to secure meat and produce from their network of local farmers and purveyors.

This is something the festival has wanted to do for quite some time, Maute Smith said. We definitely worked with a lot of local talent in order to inform this program.

Long lines and a shortage of food was the main complaint among attendees of the festivals culinary village. Maute Smith believes the festival has found a solution by dedicating new areas to food sampling.

Weve taken some inspirations from the foodways of the Charleston area and also some of our past popular events, Maute Smith said. Those will be all new food-focused areas in addition to our snack shacks.

Tickets to the 2023 Charleston Wine + Food Festival go on sale at 11 a.m. Oct. 20, with a full schedule announcement coming at 11 a.m. Oct. 6 via the festival’s app, which can be downloaded using Google and Apple’s app stores.

Graft will sometimes host pop-ups on other days of the week, like when the owner of popular Winston-Salem, N.C., restaurant Mission Pizza Napoletana stopped by on a Monday. On Oct. 13, retired NBA superstar Dwayne Wade’s When We Gather dinner series stopped by Graft, with celebrated chef BJ Dennis serving food that paired with wine at the event.

Hosting pop-ups has always made sense for Oyediran and White given the wine shops roots the duo brought bottles to places like The Daily and Lewis Barbecue prior to opening, using the short services to test out their concept and build momentum.

It worked for them, and the events are benefiting the vendors stopping by, especially those who serve on Good Neighbor Sunday.

Its grown a lot, which is great for everyone I think, White said. Weve had a lot of people come through, and I think weve seen some businesses grow.

Kevin Regan of Rooted Wine Bottle Market & Bar in Mount Pleasant planned to utilize pop-ups and food trucks frequently upon opening in April, but negative feedback from the neighborhood forced him to dial back the service.

Regan, who previously led the beverage program at Kiki & Rye and Community Table, used this minor setback as a chance to expand Rooteds in-house food program. Under the leadership of chef Charlie Shourds, Rooted has added flatbreads to the menu, along with specials like oysters and shredded steak sandwiches.

Southern cooking is a big tent, and the Charleston Wine + Food Festival allows attendees to stroll through much of it. While focused on the long grain rice, oysters, and gumbos of the Low Country, it makes space for the many influences that weave in and out of Southern food. Historic Downtown Charleston Home Finds New Life As Communal Wine Bar

The whole purpose of this is to do what I’ve done my whole career, which is to get a little more wine on the table, Conway said. Were really working with wines that I source from all over the world that are extremely food-friendly.

The dinner party moniker could not be more fitting given the setting and style of service. Dinners are housed in the candlelit, living-room area of the wine bar, anchored by a restored original fireplace, while the wine continues to flow for walk-ins looking for a quick glass at a bar facing the entrance.

The eight-course meal, modestly priced at $65 without wine, features fresh fish, chicken, cheese and dessert courses, all of which are made in a pint-sized kitchen next door that on weekdays churns out burritos.

This operation, dubbed The Press, is another way Conway is bringing food into the wine bar, though The Press operates outside of The Tippling Houses hours.

The flattop used to cook the California-style burritos is utilized by The Tippling House chef Sean Clinton at night to make his sausage and broccoli rabe-filled rotolo, a stuffed pasta dish that resembles rolled-up lasagna.

Its been a challenge figuring out how to utilize that space, but I made it work. Im only cooking for a small amount of people, Clinton said. Its been nice being in such a small volume.

Its hard to believe we are just five months out from the 17th installment of the Charleston Wine + Food Festival, set to take place March 1-5.

As we approach the Oct. 20 festival ticket release, The Post and Courier got the inside scoop on the slate of 100-plus events that will take over the Lowcountry in the spring.

The festival entered a new era in 2022, moving the flagship Culinary Village to Riverfront Park in North Charleston after hosting the three-day extravaganza featuring drinks and samples from chefs in Marion Square from 2005 to 2020. Riverfront Park will again host the Culinary Village in 2023.

More change is ahead, as the festival looks to replace former Executive Director Gillian Zettler, who announced two weeks after the 2022 festivals conclusion that she would depart the nonprofit to accept a new role in Charleston with Beemok Hospitality.

The point is to create real conversation and to do so around food, Maute Smith said.

Tickets for the event go on sale Oct. 20.

The event features local and guest chefs, as well as wine and beer experts, artists and more. Organizers say they have a lot of plans for this years festival.

This is a homegrown event. It really is a local festival that has created a platform on a national scale, and its an opportunity for us to boast about all the great things that we have here in Charleston. Our food scene, our beverage scene, and really put on a world class experience right here in our backyard, Interim Executive Director Alyssa Maute Smith said

This years festival runs March 1-5 around downtown Charleston and at North Charlestons Riverfront Park.

Connor Simonson earlier this year found himself behind a computer writing creative content for Lowcountry Land Trust, a local land-protection nonprofit. Simonson, who graduated from College of Charleston with a degree in creative writing, liked how the work connected him to his community the same sentiment that has always brought him back to cooking.

Interspersed between content and freelance writing work were full- and part-time roles in Charleston kitchens, with Cypress, Zero George and Edmunds Oast on his resume.

While working at Lowcountry Land Trust, Simonson started to miss the smells, sights and sounds of the kitchen and being on his feet. He wanted to return to a professional kitchen in a full-time capacity.

For me personally, it’s the way that I connect with people, Simonson said. I’ve figured out that thats something I have to do in my life.

Everything else is more shareable snacks, Simonson said. Its a bar, its not a full-on restaurant. But thats also what keeps it fun and keeps it approachable.

Simonson and Clinton both take pride in the food they are serving at Stems & Skins and The Tippling House.

Seeing the face of a surprised diner who realizes they were able to build such composed plates in minimalist kitchens is just a bonus.
