Chardonnay is a popular variety of white wine. It has some staple characteristics, like being generally medium to full bodied with moderate acidity.

Whilst chardonnay is often dry, the question of whether chardonnay is sweet or dry is not so straightforward to answer. It depends greatly on the type of chardonnay you are drinking, where it was made, and how it has been aged.

What Makes A Wine Dry

Dry refers to the perceived taste the wine leaves in your mouth because it contains low levels of residual sugar after fermentation. In contrast, sweet wine will have higher residual sugar.

When the winemaker allows the yeast to consume all the wines residual sugar during the fermentation process, the resulting absence of sugary sweetness leaves a delicious dry wine.

Many people think that dry wine will dry out your mouth, but this comes from misunderstanding the term. Because alcohol dehydrates, any wine could technically lead to a feeling of dry mouth. Well get more into the subject of dry mouth feel in the next section.

If you think a dry wine wont taste fruity because its not sweet, you may be surprised. This is a common misconception, but all it takes is one taste of dry, fruity Chardonnay for that myth to be laid to rest.

Just because a wine is fruit forward does not mean it is sweet. People often mistake fruitiness for sweetness, but the vast majority of wines in the world are in fact dry! Many different wines across the board will have naturally occurring fruit notes to them, and no, that does not mean there are literal apples or strawberries in your wine.

How To Spot A Sweet White Wine

Have you ever tasted a certain style of wine just to understand that the wine you bought does not have the same taste you expected? Maybe you have a dinner planned that goes perfectly with the sweet Riesling, or you just want a crispy Sauvignon Blanc. You are in the wine department and have no idea how to tell if the wine will be sweet or dry, because all the labels are confusing the AF. Dont be afraid. Here are some tips and tricks to understand how sweet the wine will be before you buy it:

Check the ABV and RS

Sweetness is measured by calculating the residual sugar left in the wine after fermentation. If all the sugar in the wine has been transformed into alcohol, then the alcohol by volume tends to be high and the RS will be low . This wine will be at the driest end of the spectrum. On the other hand, if after fermentation the wine still has some sugar, then the ABV tends to be lower and the SR is higher, resulting in a sweeter wine. If you want a sweet wine, look for bottles with 11% GLA or lower, and for dry wines usually 14% or more. This is a good rule of thumb, but like any wine, there are exceptions.

Dry red: Pinot Noir, Sira, Malbec, Merlot, Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Fran.

Strongly sweet: dessert wines sherry, port, sauterne, cold wine.

White Wine With Chicken

Both white and red wine go well with chicken meals. Choosing a drink, its important to take into account the peculiarities of cooking. Fried chicken is served with light alcohol with a pleasant sourness. For example, chardonnay, riesling, sauvignon blanc, and viognier. Chicken meat in salads, soups is tender, without a pronounced flavor. The lightest white wines are perfect for these dishes. Deep-fried chicken can be supplemented with sparkling wines or champagne.

  • Assyrtiko is one of the driest white wine you can find. Assyrtiko comes from Greece, mainly from the island of Santorini. It has searing acidity and an interesting saline quality. Assyrtiko is also used to make Vin Santo, a very sweet dessert wine which it is why it appears on both sides of the White Wine Dryness Chart.
  • Melon, or Melon de Bourgogne, is the grape that makes the very dry white wines of Muscadet in the Loire Valley. It is often considered the driest white wine.
  • Sauvignon Blanc
  • A very popular white wine, Sauvignon Blanc is almost always dry although some off-dry styles are out there. French Sauvignon Blanc will be the driest whereas Sauvignon Blanc from the New World will be less dry.
  • Gruner Veltliner
  • A very dry and spicy white wine from Austria, Gruner Veltliner is a safe bet when looking for a dry white wine.
  • Chenin Blanc comes in many different styles that vary from very dry to quite sweet. Most Chenin Blanc from South Africa is dry, whereas Chenin Blanc from Vouvray is demi-sec or medium-sweet.
  • Pinot Gris/Pinot Grigio
  • Pinot Gris and Pinot Grigio are the same grape variety in French its called Pinot Gris and Pinot Grigio in Italian. Most Pinot Grigio will be dry. Some Pinot Gris in Alsace or Oregon may have an element of sweetness.
  • Semillon makes mostly dry white wine in Bordeaux where its blended with Sauvignon Blanc. However, it also makes the very sweet dessert wine Sauternes.
  • Moscato or Muscat

    Sweet Wines Vs Dry Wines Whats The Difference

    Where a wine falls on this scale is dependent on a couple of factors. These include the residual sugar, or rather the sugar that was not converted into alcohol during the fermentation process, and how much acid is in the wine.

    The grapes age at harvest also plays a part in how sweet or dry a wine is. Young grapes have less sugar and more acid than mature ones, making ripe grapes ideal for a sweeter drink. Some winemakers may infuse more sweetness into the grape after harvest by sunning it in natural light. It is a combination of various growth, harvest and fermentation factors rather than a single condition or quality that determines the sweet or dry level of a wine.

    There are some exceptions. For example, many champagnes are labeled as being dry, despite generally tasting pretty sweet. Wines like Dry Rieslings or Gewürztraminers still tend to taste sweet. Most red table wines fall firmly into the dry category, despite variation in sweetness between varieties.

    It often comes down to tannin content. Tannins are a naturally occurring compound found in wine and other foods or drinks that clash with the proteins in saliva to create a dry, bitter taste or mouthfeel. Wines with more tannins will have a drier taste than wines with few tannins, regardless of sugar content.

    Texture Taste & Flavors Of Chardonnay

    Depending on the wine region and winemaking process, Chardonnay can have a range of flavors. In general, Chardonnay is described as dry, medium- to full-bodied with moderate tannins and acidity. It typically has tropical fruit flavors but the essences of these flavors, no sweetness required.

    When aged in oak barrels, Chardonnay has a creamier texture and a buttery taste along with hints of vanilla and spices. If it’s a Chardonnay that’s aged in stainless steel barrels or plastic tanks, it will have a crisper consistency with bright and fruity flavors of green apple and lemon similar to Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc. But in both scenerios, you’ll likely have some mango, papaya, lime, or pineapple nuances.

    Chardonnay has an alcohol content that is above the US standard for the average glass of wine which is 12% ABV. When produced in warmer climates like California, the ABV will be closer to 15%.

    Sweet Wines And Fruity Wines The Differences

    A wines fruitiness is also not necessarily connected to its sweetness.

    Thats because most dry white wines possess rich and fruity tastes, including tasting like apples, pear, and other types of fruits. However, the average persons taste palate naturally associates fruit with sweetness, so tasting an apple may trick you into thinking that youre drinking a sweet wine when it is pretty dry.

    It is essential to rely on elements outside of your taste to decide if youre drinking a dry or sweet wine.

    Typically, the wines we listed above are all dry, so if you buy a bottle that tastes fruity, you can rest assured knowing you dont have a sweet drink.

    However, just as importantly, you need to look at the bottle to determine its sweetness before purchasing. Surprisingly, this step is not only possible but relatively simple.

    Do Dry Wines Have More Alcohol Than Sweet Wines

    Lets circle back to the relationship between alcohol content and residual sugar. We know that dry wine has less residual sugar, and we debunked the myth that it always has high alcohol content. Its important to remember that this doesnt mean it never has high alcohol content just that ABV isnt the only metric.

    The best metric for ranking wine from bone dry to very sweet lies in the residual sugars. Heres a quick guide:

    • Bone Dry: Extremely dry, contains less than 0.5% residual sugar. This level is so low that most peoples taste buds can hardly detect it.
    • Dry: The general level of dryness denotes a satisfying lack of sugar or sweetness.
    • Off-Dry: The tiniest bit of sweetness in a dry wine bumps it to the off-dry category. Its still free from a sugary flavor but sweet enough to be just one step removed from a dry classification.
    • Semi-Sweet: Still a bit dry, semi-sweet wines contain more than 3% residual sugar. Theyre not as strong as sweet, but pretty close at this level.
    • Sweet: Were officially out of the dry wine woods at this level. Sweet wine has over 30 grams of residual sugar per liter.
    • Very Sweet: Sugary sweet and highly concentrated, very sweet wine is sometimes called dessert wine.

    Is Chardonnay Supposed To Be Chilled

    White wine needs a chill to lift its aromas and acidity. However, when theyre too cold, flavors become muted. Like reds, fuller-bodied wines like Chardonnay from Burgundy and California shine between 50°F and 60°F. Sauternes is a dessert wine that falls into the category of whites.

    Wines that are too hot, too dry, or too sweet can make a wine taste flat and uninteresting. A wine thats too acidic, like Pinot Noir or Cabernet Sauvignon, can also make the wine too bitter, which can be a turn-off for some drinkers.

    Bone Dry is a technical term meaning theres no more sugar in the wine. Styles that normally land in this category include Bordeaux, Pinot Grigio, Tempranillo and Albariño. Dry wines generally refer to examples with less than 10 grams of sugar per liter , often including Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Fran, Sauvignon Blanc, Vignier, Syrah, Zinfandel, Garnacha and Chardonnay.

    Dry wines generally range between 10 and 20 g/l. Examples are Riesling, Chenin Blanc and Champagne.

    The term sweet wine can be applied to any off-dry wine and above, but is generally reserved for wines of 20 g/l or more. Any wine between 20 and 75 g/l is usually called semi-sweet wine, like Lambrusco or Moscat. The types of very sweet wine, such as Tawny Port and Vin Santo Rossi wine, are usually 75 g/l or more.

    Regardless of where a particular style fits on the wines sweet map, it is good to remember that residual sugar content and perception of sweetness are two different factors that are both related to the sweet taste of something. While residual sugar refers to the actual sugar level of the beverage, the perception of sweetness is more complex and can also occur in dry wines. For example, when a wine has tastes or aromas associated with sweetness , our taste is more often read as sweet. Other characteristics of wine, such as high levels of alcohol, can also increase the perception of sweetness, while factors such as acidity and tannins can reduce it.
