Wine is reasonably low-carb compared to other alcoholic beverages. Distilled spirits on their own are low-carb because the sugar has been distilled out, leaving only alcohol. However, most cocktails and mixed drinks are paired with high-sugar juices, sodas, and syrups. Long Island Iced Teas, for example, contain cola, lemon juice, and simple syrup, taking its carb level to 33 grams per 8.3 ounces.

Beer is another drink that isnt the most friendly for a low-carb diet since starch is one of its primary ingredients. A 12-ounce can of beer has a carb content of more than 12 grams.

Wine can have varying carb count, too. Some dessert wines have 14 grams of carbs per regular serving size. However, there is a wide range of wines, all with different flavors, alcohol levels, and carb content.

Can You Stay Healthy While Drinking Wine

While some research shows that alcohol consumption can increase weight gain, keep in mind that the odd glass of wine is not going to completely ruin your low-carb or ketogenic diet.

The key is to be mindful of what youre drinking and what youre eating. One survey found that people who drink alcohol dont just ingest the calories from their drinks they also consume extra calories while drinking.

That said, studies show that drinking red wine in moderation is good for your health, particularly heart health. When it comes to alcohol consumption, drinking in moderation means a glass of wine per week.

While sweet wines and full-bodied wines are wonderful, its probably best to save these for special occasions and opt for lighter-bodied options with low sugar content.

Cabernet wine has an average of 24 calories per ounce. Proving the “red wine has more calories” idea wrong again! Cabernet sauvignon is tied with merlot in its low calorie count. One glass is 120 calories and a full bottle is 600 calories. Red wines can get a bad rap when dieting, but you can safely say that cabernet is not a problem. Just make sure to avoid any fortified cabernets on the market as these added sugar can add calories.

Understanding The Carbs In Wine

When most people think carbohydrates, they think of foods that are starchy or drinks high in sugar content. Dry wine actually contains no starch and very little residual sugar. The natural sugar that occurs in grapes is converted to alcohol during the fermentation process. There are not technically carbohydrates in wine, but what nutritionists and other scientific foodies like to call âcarbohydrate equivalents.â In fact, the USDA refers to the carbs found in wine as âCarbohydrate by difference.â This means that carbohydrates are not detected in the food they are what remain after fat and protein have been detected, accounted for and removed from the equation. These âcarbohydrate equivalentsâ have to do with how the body metabolizes the drink.

  • Wine contains alcohol that is processed in the liver.
  • Your liver converts the alcohol into acetate, which is a type of fuel the body can use like carbohydrates, fat, or protein.
  • Your body burns the acetate first, before other fuels, turning it into energy before it ever gets a chance to turn into fat.

So while you may want to count carbs with each glass of wine you drink, keep in mind that these carbohydrate equivalents, particularly in red wine, may actually lower your blood sugar, rather than sending it into a spike. People with diabetes should continue to count the carbs in the wine as normal, because consuming too much may have an adverse effect on blood sugar levels.

Increased Risk For Heart Disease And Stroke

A 2014 study published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings reported an association between moderate alcohol consumption and a decreased risk for certain cardiac events. But it’s important to note that excessive alcohol consumption is the third leading cause of premature death in the United States.

According to the report, heavy alcohol use is one of the most common causes of reversible hypertension it accounts for about one-third of all nonischemic dilated cardiomyopathy cases. Usually, beer is served in a can or a bottle, so the serving size for beer is a 12 oz. Thats about 150 calories and 13 g carbs in a regular beer, and 100 calories and 6 g of carbs in a light beer. So if you are like me and actually like light beer, then that is the clear winner out of the two choices. A single regular beer is not going to make a huge difference to the overall calorie and carb budget though, so if you are a beer connoisseur, go for a regular one.

It took me multiple back-and-forth emails to squeeze this information out of one producer.

Good News: Many wines will fit the bill! On our searches, we discovered a few key clues:

  • Value-driven dry wines tend to have more residual sugar to improve the taste. Weve seen value wines range from about 530 g/L of residual sugar.
  • Generally speaking, white and rosé wines often feature some level of residual sugar. Sweetness in white and rosé wines helps counterbalance acidity. So, to be safe, you can anticipate 10 g/L or 1.5 g carbs per serving.
  • European wines tend to prioritize dryness. So you might try more , , , , or even that compelling listed above!

    How Many Calories In White Wine

    White wine has an average of 24 calories per ounce. This number is only slightly lower than that of red wine. This is because there is such a broad spectrum of white wines. A wine like a riesling will come in below average but another white like a sweet dessert wine will be far above it. It’s important to check both the ABV and sugar content in a white wine to understand where it falls on the spectrum. Any added sugar will add up quickly.

    Calories Per Glass Of White Wine

    Calories and wine come from alcohol and sugar. Wine is made up of alcohol, carbohydrates, and trace minerals. The carbohydrates in wine come from the residual sugar that is left in the wine. FYI, alcohol adds a higher calorie count to wine than sugar, with seven calories per gram. In contrast, sugar content adds around four calories per gram. With that in mind, you can assume the more alcohol by volume, the more calories a glass of wine will have.

    A wines sweetness dramatically impacts the number of calories in white wine. Why? During fermentation, yeast is a queen who uses her superpowers to turn natural sugar into alcohol. To make a sweeter wine, winemakers prevent the yeast from eating up all of the sugar. This leaves a little residual sugar that allows the wine to be sweet. In contrast, dry wine is allowed to thoroughly go through the fermentation process and leave a wine with some sugar in it but very little.

    The sweeter the wine, the more calories it has. Dry white wines have zero to six calories from sugar, off-dry wines have 10 to 30 calories from sugar, sweet wines have 30 to 72 calories from sugar, and very sweet wines have 72 to 130 calories from all that extra sugar.

    Will Drinking Wine Make You Gain Weight

    That depends. If you have a regular after-work wine sipping habit, cutting back could contribute to weight loss, since the alcohol does add extra calories to your daily calorie count . That said, a single 5-ounce serving of wine has fewer calories than a glass of soda and not much more than a glass of OJ, so it can be part of a healthy diet without causing weight gain as long as you dont go overboard.

    One word of caution: Drinking alcohol can lead to more snacking or poor food choices, which can cause weight gain, says clinical dietitian Becky Kerkenbush, MS, RD. Its a lot easier to overdo it on cheese and crackers or handfuls of bar snacks when your inhibitions are lower.
