An Exciting New Look For An Iconic Landmark

The Eiffel Tower is officially the most popular paid tourist attraction in the world. It now attracts close to seven million visitors per year. In fact, since the last refurbishment of the towers first floor around thirty years ago this majestic iron lady has welcomed more visitors than she did during her first hundred years! The public spaces that were renovated back in the 1980s had become obsolete and were no longer adequate for handling this increase in visitor interest.

Of course, none of this enduring popularity could have been predicted when this 324 metres high tower was built to form an entrance arch for the 1889 Paris Worlds Fair. In fact, as amazing as it seems now, Gustave Eiffels masterpiece of engineering was scheduled to be demolished in 1909. Thankfully, it was reprieved and allowed to attain the legendary status it enjoys today.

The new development is also planned to be a sustainable one, as solar panels and wind turbines fitted to the renovated pavilions are predicted to be capable of generating 10,000 kWh/year, thereby reducing the towers carbon footprint. When youve recovered your equilibrium after traversing the glass floor, why not make your way up to the top floor to enjoy a panoramic view of the city while you sip a glass of champagne? Yes, tucked into the towers structure and open each day from noon until 10:00 pm, the new Champagne Bar offers a selection of pink or white bubbly served chilled to perfection for the perfect romantic moment.

History Of Eiffel Tower Restaurants

Champagne Bar at the Eiffel Tower Editorial Image

When the Eiffel Tower was inaugurated during the Universal Exhibition of 1889, it housed four majestic wooden pavilions designed by Stephen Sauvestre on the platform on the first floor. Each of these restaurants could seat 500 people. The kitchens for each restaurant were located on the underside of the platform. Until 1900, the restaurants relied on gas lights.

  • Flamad: Located on the Trocadéro side was a bar that served Alsatian cuisine. Later on, it began to function as a theater until the Exhibition of 1900, when it revived its role as a restaurant again. This time it took on a Dutch theme. The theatre resumed its activities until war broke out in 1914.
  • Russian Restaurant: You could enjoy a typical Russian fare at this establishment located between the Eastern and Northern pillars.
  • Brébant: Located on the Champ-de-Mars side was this French restaurant, which was considered a chic restaurant.

These establishments were demolished for the International Exhibition of 1937. At this time, the first floor of the Eiffel Tower was completely renovated and two restaurants were rebuilt in its place. One was built where the Russian restaurant had been, and the other where the Dutch one had. They were built by architect Auguste Granet, who was married to the granddaughter of Gustave Eiffel.

Later, in the early 1980s, when the Tower once again went through renovations, these restaurants were once again replaced by La Belle France and Le Parisien.

No, you dont have to book the Eiffel Tower champagne bar in advance. You can just show up and buy a ticket, but keep in mind that it may be quite crowded, especially during peak tourist season.

A Champagne Bar is a closet style location where you can pour champagne into plastic glasses over the top of a split door. On the second floor, you can also get a plastic glass of champagne and macarons. The top floor of the hotel was crowded, and the champagne was extremely expensive. The second floor has a better view because landmarks can be clearly identified there. Although the tower was crowded with people last night because of no lines, it was fine to walk right up. Eiffel Tower Champagne Bar

Hi all.

Does anyone know if you can get to the Champagne Bar without having tickets for the Tower or waiting on the long lines outside? In other words, can you beat the lines by paying to go to the Champagne Bar ???

Thanks in advance

no. it’s a ‘snack bar’ kind of setup on the summit level, so you must first get to the summit…. that takes a ticket.

In case you aren’t yet aware of it, you can prebook tickets on the Tour Eiffel website for a specific timeslot. *No refunds* for poor weather or decisions to close due to wind or such incidents. Benefit is you don’t wait in the cashier lines…

Edited: 9 years ago

Thank you travelnutty. I kind of dropped the ball because I had diligently checked the website for months but July was still unavailable. I then got crazy with work, kids, life and by the time I checked back all the tickets for the time we will be in Paris are gone . I always pre-book and save a tremendous amount of time but now I’m kicking myself for not staying on top of it.

As they say “C’est la vie” !!!!!!!!! I’ll either suck it up or make reservations at one of the restaurants

Thanks again

You can try drinks at the bar at Tour Montparnasse, I guess it is a part of Ciel de Paris. I don’t mean the 360* bar – that is a snack bar… I mean the cocktail bar, apparently called “Le Bar Américain “…
