Best White: Frontera Sauvignon Blanc

Region: Chile | ABV: 12.5% | Tasting Notes: Lemon peel, Tropical fruit, Green apple
Bright, young, and fresh, this summery Sav Blanc has its zippy roots in Chiles Central Valley, where the grapes have a mineral exuberance. Its a crisp sip with citrusy, snappy appeal, hints of tropical fruit, and a clean finish that makes it a match for all sorts of light picnic foods. This ones a refreshing bargain.
La Vieille Ferme White Wine France 3l
My favorite of the three La Vieille Ferme box wines I sampled, the white wine has a pale gold color, a tropical fruit nose, notes of underripe banana and hints of pineapple, and a chalky kind of mineral character, with good acid on a mouth-coating finish. Also look out for the boxed rosé, which has a pale salmon pink color, and is quite simple and clean with strawberry, white peach, and prickly pear notes, and subtle Mediterranean herb notes. And the red boxed wine is worth trying, too. Deep ruby-purple color, this wine is quite soft, with mouth-coating tannins, subtle red berry and earthy aromas, and a spicy finish.
How I Chose The Boxed Wines For Tasting
Because casually swinging by multiple grocery stores isnt the smartest idea right now, I chose options that were available at my local Kroger. Black Box and Dark Horse both make their rosé in three-liter bag-in-box formats, but they werent available at my grocery store. Instead, I tasted those same wines in their single-serve formats. I also threw in a couple of options from smaller importers that can be purchased online.
Note: Most boxes I bought denote that they last 30 days after opening, however in my experience, if you keep your box in the refrigerator, you can get closer to five or six weeks out of it.
As promised, here are my favorites in a few different categories.

Why Buy Wine Online
While the idea of buying wine online may seem daunting, it’s actually a great way to make an educated, rather than impulsive decision. With many online retailers including professional wine ratings or scores, educational resources to read up on, and the ability to compare prices, consumers now have a library of information right from on your computer screen at home. Other bonuses like free shipping options, unique monthly wine clubs, and with access to a greater selection of wines than the local grocery, it’s no wonder that online wine purchases are on the rise.

The Best Boxed Ros: Provisions Ros Wine
My favorite in this category was Provisions Rosé Wine . The packaging doesnt denote the specific part of the U.S. that this wine is produced, just the fact that its American. Because of that lack of specificity, I didnt have high hopes. But compared to other rosés I tasted, most with an artificially sweet finish, Provisions tasted much cleaner and more refreshing. There is a hint more sweetness in this box than youd find in, say, a traditional rosé from Provence, but it wasnt cloying. The overall aroma and flavor reminded me of strawberry lemonade. I did the math and the price works out to $4.25 per 750 milliliters . Thats pretty hard to beat!

Reasons You Should Give Boxed Wine A Try
While it sometimes gets a bad rap, there are lots of reasons to love boxed wine. First and foremost, its super economical.
Another major plus? You waste less wine when you drink the boxed stuff. If youre the kind of person who can never finish a bottle before it starts to turn, wine-in-a-bag-in-box might be the solution for you. You can have a glass or two one night, and then three nights later have another glass that still tastes good . Because the wine is stored in a plastic bag, its not exposed to air as you tap into its contents.
And last but not least, boxed wine has a smaller carbon footprint than traditional glass bottles. This is because cardboard packaging is so much lighter than glass. While some of the components are thin plastic, which can be hard to recycle, you can, at the very least, recycle the cardboard box on the outside.
On board with the box? Great! Now you just need to learn which ones are worth your bucks. Lucky for you, I did a legit taste test.

What If My State Doesnt Allow Wine To Be Shipped In
There are several states that dont allow any alcohol to be shipped in. In these cases, youll need to find a retailer in your own state that ships wine and work with their site to find what youre looking for. Wine-Searcher is probably a great way to look for a reliable shipper if you dont know the best retailers in your area. Here is a list ofstate wine shipping regulations to help you determine if you can receive shipments.
Always look for a site with real-time inventory and clear shipping methods. Avoid fly-by-night sites that list ghost inventory and overcharge for shipping.

Know Shipping Policies And Laws Before Buying
The first thing to know is that some states do not qualify for wine delivery. After the repeal of Prohibition, each state was left to create its own system of alcohol regulations. As a result, some states do not allow out-of-state wineries to ship directly to consumers.
If your intended address qualifies for wine shipments, there are still a couple other challenges to consider. Because it’s alcohol, a signature of someone 21 and over is required. If you work during the day and have your wine shipped to your residence, you’ll need someone of age there to sign and accept it.
Hot temperatures are the death of fine wines, as they can turn to vinegar if left on a delivery truck or outside too long. If you belong to wine clubs, you probably already know this as many clubs won’t ship during the summer months just to avoid the risk.
Sometimes retailers don’t necessarily stock all the wines they list for sale they wait for orders and get the bottles from the fulfillment houses. This can create delays, or finding out the wine you want is not actually available. By picking one of the best online wine retailers, this issue of phantom inventory is far less of a risk.

Regions To Look For When Buying Wine Online
The best places to buy wine online will have a good selection of wines from lesser-known regions. Being armed with the knowledge to recognize quality is paramount, long-term, for deciding what you like and how to get value for your money. Before you have an opportunity to taste a lot of wine, however, it can be difficult to know where to get the most bang for your buck. To help you on your quest, here are a few of my favorite wine regions to find phenomenal value:
Lodi, California: We are happy that Lodi’s wine country has remanded a relative secret all these years. The anonymity has allowed the local wine quality to increase without a corresponding increase in prices.
When people do know of Lodi, they generally know about Zin. That means you can find amazing deals on any other varietal. Love Napa Valley Cabernet? You can find similar quality in Lodi at a quarter of the price.
for a selection of Lodi wines at Wine.com.
Portugal: When most people think of Portuguese wines they think of Port sweet, fortified after-dinner wine. What most dont realize is that Portugal makes a stunning variety of world-class dry wines as well, and at a fraction of the price of many better-known wine regions.
Barolo lovers should look for reds from Bairrada those who like Bordeaux-blends may find the dry reds of the Douro region to be of interest Sauvignon Blanc drinkers will adore the whites of the Vinho Verde region in the north.

More Ways To Save Money On Quality Wine
Beyond looking for certain regions for value, you can also get creative with how you buy and consume your wine.
While I urge consumers to be respectful of a restaurants policies on corkage, if buying wine from a restaurant wine list is cost-prohibitive, you may consider going to a BYO restaurant.
Additionally, many consumers are now buying wines online or from wineries through direct-to-consumer programs. Increasingly, online flash sales are popping up as well.
That said, the personalized experienced you get when you shop at a local retailer or have a sommelier assist yourselections at a restaurant is a big part of the experience for many consumers, and rightfully so. If you enjoy this value-added experience, as I often do, then by all means enjoy–and feel good that you know where that money is going!
There are some online wine stores that are doing a good job creating that personal touch. These stores typically have a chat feature. The person on the other end of the chat is a wine expert who is trained to assist you in your search for high-quality wine. The online wine superstore, wine.com offers a live wine expert to help you as you shop.
