Calla Lily Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

Calla Lily Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Ultimate Red Usa Napa Wine Review

Calla Lily Ultimate Red Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ’16 94 Points

This continues to be one of my go to wines for reasonably priced Napa reds. It is a blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon with the rest made up of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Deep garnet in color, mostly opaque and bright. The nose has cassis, baking spices, slight oak, and a bit of leather. Medium to full bodied. On the palate, there is nice cassis fruit with underlying earthiness. Medium finish. This should continue to drink well for the next eight to twelve years. It drinks well on its own and would be a nice match with roasts.

May 23, 2022 – We drank this wine after a 2-hour decant, and it did not much resemble the wines described in previous reviews. The fruit was shy, and subordinated to the tannins and oak. Finally, after another hour, some fruit started to show…but still not much. I’ll probably wait another couple of years before opening the next bottle.

Ultimate Red Receives 90

The Wine Advocate reviewed the 2016 Ultimate Cabernet Sauvignon in its December 2017 issue:

90-92 points: A barrel sample with a blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc, 6% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Ultimate shows a deep garnet-purple color and nose of cassis, blueberry coulis and black forest cake with hints of dried herbs and vanilla. Big, full, rich and fruity in the mouth with a nice frame of grainy tannins, it finishes long and refreshing.

Premiere Napa Valley Auction Wines

Though reminiscent of how Hospices de Beaune wines are produced, the process is uniquely American. The winemakers take a gloves-off approach, often using varieties they may not bottle as a stand-alone, or perhaps a noted white-wine-only house producing a red wine. These wines showcase Napa Valley’s sense of exploration in fine winemaking.

Winemaker Legend Cary Gotts Mountain Brilliance

Calla Lily Ultimate Red Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

One of James Sucklings Top 100 Reds of Napa Valley 2016, this powerhouse 2013 Calla Lily Cabernet Sauvignon won 93 points from the former Wine Spectator bureau chief, who lauded it as sleek and polished with silky tannins. Renowned, veteran Napa winemaker Cary Gott took full advantage at Calla Lily of the 2013 vintage, deemed by Robert Parker to be one of the most epic and awesome vintages in Napa Valleys history. Tending to vines planted in Pope Valley in 1995, Gott pushed the envelope on mountain concentration with the help of the slopes eastern exposure, warm afternoon winds, and the miracle growing seasons dry, hot conditions. Given the now-legendary status of the vintage, youre lucky to find a 2013 Napa Cabernet of merit thats still affordable. On that note, released at $65, this 2013 Ultimate Red is just $49.99 per bottle from Wine Access 23% off. This may be one of the last remaining outstanding Cabernet bargain buys of the vintage.

Locals call Pope Valley the morning side of Howell Mountain, where peals of sunlight and high elevation endow Bordeaux-style grapes with broad shoulders, phenomenal density, and a terrifically age-worthy backbone. At Calla Lilys vineyard, daytime highs are lower than most of the valley but nights tend to be on the warmer side. This more regular ripening cycle makes for dense Cabernet Sauvignons, often complicated by notes of rose petal and pine needles.
