Worst: Charles Shaw Chardonnay Organic From Trader Joe’s

We are all for organic wines. Treating the earth kindly is a great thing and something more winemakers should be doing. Charles Shaw is actually very good about this and has an entire line of organic varieties of many of their wines. They’re also uniquely passionate about how easy it is to open said wines they even have a specially designed cork. If you’ve ever tried to fish out a cork with a knife and gumption, you’d appreciate this feature. However, all the brownie points in the world couldn’t quite save Charles Shaw’s Chardonnay Organic. Sorry.

Chardonnays are known for a distinct flavor, and while Charles Shaw’s organic offering may open up with exactly that, it quickly falls flat and leaves an unpleasant taste on your tongue. Shaw claims that their Chardonnay has a light body, but considering how quickly the flavor dies in your mouth, it may be too light. We may even say the initial taste is too bold, too intense. It’s like this bottle is screaming “I am Chardonnay!” at you. Calm down, we hear you. We just don’t like you.

Best: Trader Joe’s Petit Reserve Chenin Blanc Viognier

At $7.99 for a 750mL bottle, you can’t really go wrong with Trader Joe’s Petit Reserve Cheninc Blanc Viognier, a white wine with quite a punch. It’s a very good dupe of the popular Pine Ridge Chenin Blanc Viognier according to Reverse Wine Snob, and one that will save you a few bucks a bottle at that. This aromatic and floral wine is perfect with light pasta, chicken, and fish dishes. It’s also just great to drink by the glass in the sunshine . It’s not your average white wine, but that’s one of the reasons why we love it.

What makes this flavor combination so unique lies in the two grapes used. Chenin Blanc grapes are originally from the Loire Valley in France and produce an acidic, but fruity white wine. Alternatively, Viognier grapes are from the Northern Rhône Valley. These grapes have a bolder full body flavor. According to Trader Joe’s themselves, mixing the two together produces a subtly sweet, but still acidic wine that has a perkiness of nectarine, lemon, grapefruit, and even a bit of pear. These fruity notes make this wine bright and clear, and is a perfect alternative to Chardonnay, if you’re looking to switch it up a bit.

Pumpkin Spice Creamy Cashew Cultured Yogurt Alternative

Maybe die-hard pumpkin spice enthusiasts who also enjoy cashew yogurt will like this product, but anyone else will probably think it’s weird and kind of gross. Most non-dairy yogurts have a questionable texture and flavor to begin with and are sort of gloopy and slippery without the satisfying creamy mouthfeel of regular yogurt. Add to that the cloying pumpkin spice flavor and this non-dairy yogurt is a for sure miss.

Even though the label states that this yogurt is enhanced with a bit of coconut cream to provide a creamier texture, this yogurt still tastes much waterier than regular dairy yogurt. The pumpkin flavor is lost a bit amongst the spices, though many pumpkin spice products rely heavily on cinnamon and nutmeg to bring to mind that pumpkin pie flavor. Many tasters on one Trader Joe’s review site also felt this is one of the worst fall offerings at the store this season.

If youre planning on drinking, ahem, a lot of wine in one sitting, Nick gives this bottle a strong endorsement. Its the best TJs wine Ive tried so far, period. Light, crisp, and chuggable. He also says that, according to his Trader Joes wine guy, this is the best value white wine in the store.

Okay truthfully I just bought this wine because I loved the bottle, but it turned out to be one of my favorites! Ive never heard of the susamaniello grape before which comes from the heel of Italy. I feel like a lot of Italian wines are on the lighter side, but this one has a very good medium body flavor. Id compare it to a cabernet, but more fruit forward.

The Sauvignon Blanc Reminded Me Of A Different Mind

Truth be told, I felt that this wine smelled a bit like a different substance folks use to get a buzz. That is to say, this drink smelled like weed.

But I want to note that the wine’s pungency is likely at least partly my fault. In my rush to organize the wine tasting, I didn’t chill the white wines. That fact led a number of us reviewers to agree that this beverage could be a reasonable option when cold.

At the time of the tasting, however, we were less than impressed. On the issue of whether the wine was worth its low price, we were split, with two negative answers, two affirmative answers, and one taster writing, “I think so?”

The wine brought to mind adjectives such as “skunky,” “spicy,” “pungent,” “punchy,” and “mineral.”

Produced in California, this wine is comprised of grapes from two different areas of the West Coasts wine region to create a juice that is fruity, floral, and jumping with acidity. The 80 percent Chenin blanc used for this wine comes from the Clarksburg appellation AKA the Gem of the Delta and gives the wine its fresh fruit character, while the 20 percent viogneir from Lodi gives the wine its floral and spicy nature as well as some viscosity.

Its a light and bright white wine, but its also got a body that you can feel.

Tasting Notes:

Floral fragrances jump out of the bottle along with smells of yuzu, peach, and ground ginger. As for the acidity on the palate, WHEW! Its smacks the tongue like a load of concrete and yet the tastes of honeyed apples, lemon curd, and lemongrass are just as noticeable. Theres a creamy, almost yogurt-like softness on the backend of the wine that rounds it all out while the acidity continues to dazzle the tastebuds in the finish.

You feel every bit of this wine from the moment it first hits your lips til it settles in the pit of your stomach.

This is the white wine you want to sip on a scorching hot day. Or pair it with spicy dishes in the thick of winter. This wine will cool down all the heat no matter the situation.
