It was a new product in that it was produced and distributed nationally from California instead of in consumers backyards, and it was named Wine Cooler. By 1985, the low-alcohol California Cooler in 12-ounce bottles sold over 12 million cases the brand was also sold to Brown-Forman that year, a beverage alcohol importer/distributor and brand-building company with an almost 150-year history.
Aside from cashing out, another good reason for the sale of California Cooler may have been the stiff competition it faced in the mid 1980s, especially from two products introduced at that time: the Canandaigua Wine Companys Sun Country Cooler and the E & J Gallo Winerys Bartles & Jaymes brands.
It wasnt the first time CWC and EJG met on the beverage alcohol playing fieldthe two had been competing for decades in the fortified American wine business. In the 1990s CWC’s expansion fever spawned Constellation Brands , which soon joined EJG at the top of the beverage alcohol heap. Heres something a little different for our list of wine coolers: Crook & Marker. Its a hard seltzer from West Palm Beach thats made with unique, gluten-free ancient grains and tropical roots. Its a bit on the sweet side as far as hard seltzers are concerned, but its pretty tasty and definitely worth a try. That said, there are numerous variations of this, including black cherry lemonade, strawberry lemonade, and mango lemonade , all of which kick up the sugar level one more slight notch making these the sweetest of the Truly family. A recent favorite of mine, Bon & Viv spiked seltzer is a wine cooler among wine coolers. Its taste is crisp and light beautiful and elegant, just as the twin mermaids on the label suggest. A combination of 4 ounces wine, 4 ounces soda, and 2 ounces of liqueur creates a wonderfully refreshing drink that balances the wine with its added ingredients. Use less wine and you run the risk of not tasting it at all, but add more and its flavors and alcohol will dominate.
This formula is great because it balances the cooler components and is the perfect size for a pint glass filled halfway with ice.
To make the perfect cooler anytime, simply combine the ingredients over ice, and stir to mix the flavors evenly. For a group, batch the wine and liqueur ahead of time and store it in the fridge, adding bubbles and ice just before serving.
